If you do go to Austin, make sure you get a brisket taco from Valentina's Tex-Mex BBQ.
Not quite as traditional, but my personal favorite BBQ in the city.
You could also take a scenic little drive out to Dripping Springs and hit up Treaty Oak Distilling, which has both excellent bourbon AND amazing barbeque (Alice's Restaurant, on site). My buddy works the pit, and he learned at Valentina's, so obviously I'm a fan. The Deep Eddy Vodka distillery is out in Dripping, also.

If you go to Franklin, you better get in line at about 6 am.
I've had it and it's obviously great, but there are plenty of places that are almost as good where you don't have to waste half a day to *maybe* get BBQ. They literally go down the line, ask people how much they want of whatever, and if someone ahead of you orders 50 pounds of brisket, you're probably not getting food. The wait can be fun if you bring beer and chairs, though.
Salt Lick's sauce is bomb, and I like their potato salad, but the the BBQ is average. The atmosphere and experience are great, though. Salt Lick is BYOB.

I like Treaty Oak but their bourbon is completely average and mostly distilled in Indiana.

. That has to be the best 2 places that close to each other in Texas!! Have not been to Black's yet, but Pecan Lodge and Cattleack are great spots. Franklins is a great experience.

Houston is light years ahead of where it was 10 years ago. Back in the day it was good co, your average southern black BBQ (places like Burns which is really good but no honky is going there) and chains
Now a days it’s legit but it up against Austin without a problem.

If rating the brisket itself, I put Roegels in that top tier and add Corkscrew and lower Pit Room down. They have good queso and tortillas and stuff but I find the meat isn't as good.
Willow's BBQ is also top tier. Waiting for the place he's partnered with to open up in Eado.
