Apparently There is a Chicken Wing Shortage

From Pluckers:
quote:
As you may have heard on local and national news, we are in the middle of a national chicken wing shortage. As a result of this, we are experiencing the highest wing prices in history. Unfortunately, this means that we have to temporarily increase the cost of bone-in chicken wings by $2 per 5 wings. Obviously, we aren’t happy about the ongoing chicken wing shortage and higher prices either, but again, this price increase is temporary and only affects our bone-in wings. As prices become lower, we’ll lower our surcharge accordingly.
We thank you for understanding and look forward to seeing you soon.

Should be logical to assume that there is a chicken shortage in general then

Ate some wings last night. Grocery store was full of them.

Possibly, though it could be a bottleneck with one type of processing that doesn't necessarily affect others.

if $2 is what it takes to keep the riff raff out so that i dont have to wait so be it. raise it $4 for all i care.

This has been going on for many months.
Blue Oak had to raise the cost of their wings like 6 months ago.

Sounds like a ploy to charge more at Pluckers
I bet those prices don't come back down
Kind of like Raisin Canes

Should put to bed that boneless wings are indeed not wings

Possibly, but consider there are only 2 wings per bird, pieced out there are 4 wing pieces per bird. Most people eat 6-8 wings per serving, so that's at least 2 birds per serving. Some servings for legs may include 2 legs, some others are 1 leg and 1 thigh. A breast serving is usually just one breast. So for most dishes that aren't wings, it takes one bird per serving.

this particular nuance has always been fascinating to me. Many folks will end up putting down 15-20 wings in a sitting. Taking into account all of the places that serve mass quantities of wings as well as the grocery stores that sell them frozen and fresh....my mind cannot comprehend the number of chickens that it takes to satisfy this demand.

No it shouldn't, there's enough chickens. There aren't enough people working to cut them up.

Same here, but for the life of me I can't understand the pricing. They were $2.99 a lb. at the local Rouses and a pack with 14 wings cost me just over $15.
Right next to them were whole chickens at $.99 a lb. and 10 lb. bags of leg quarters at $.69 a lb.
Guess they are just taking advantage of the Chicken Wing" trend and raking in the money. Years ago wings and backs were crab bait.

Let me offer this.
I have a good friend, first hand knowledge, who owns a logistics and trucking company out of GA. Their primary customer is one of the giant chicken companies (one of the big three but I don't want to say who).
When that cyber attack hit the beef suppliers last month, it wasn't widely publicized but the exact same software is used for the chicken and pork industries. Both of them got hit as well. They immediately told him to expect production drop off and his company is currently shipping HALF of what it was the prior month. So the shortage isn't worker based, its related to that cyber attack.

Yep, my Dad owns a poultry farm and they couldn't even bring feed to the farm because of the computer system being down at the mill.

And therein lies the problem with relying on computers so much.

If you visited a chicken plant, youd may not eat chicken ever again

Chicken processing is largely automated, makes sense

Chickens grow incredibly fast. They go from an egg to this in about 42 days and are ready for slaughter. Chicken farms also tend to be in the middle of nowhere so the average person doesnt realize how many chickens are out there.
Yea you need a lot of chickens for the wings but everything gets used on a chicken, all the way down to the feet, which generally get shipped to Asian countries.
A computer hack can be devastating to the supply industry because a chicken processing plant is highly automated. People arent in there cutting up chickens like it was mentioned in here. You have people monitoring the stations a chicken goes through but its not a very hands on process. You would need an army of people to do the work that the machines do.
The most hands on in the processing line is hanging the live chickens on the feet hooks and right after the eviscerator, which will make you think twice about eating chickens again per Gyno.

As someone who has done consulting for Sanderson Farms and has been to almost all their processing facilities, hatcheries, and feed mills; I feel very comfortable buying their chicken seeing the conditions of their operation.

I will agree that this portion of the process it literally like being in Hell and it's amazing how it transitions to a chilled, clean environment.

Lol that is a good description. I was in that room with one of my best friends, who's a vegetarian, and her also vegetarian friend. Needless to say, they were not having a great time in there
It's immaculately clean after that though
