The snoball is a New Orleanian iced treat that (controversial opinion alert) improves upon the classic snow cone. All thanks to the engineering skills of Ernest Hansen, the erstwhile proprietor of Hansen’s Sno-Bliz, which has been in business since 1939. The snow cone is made of coarser chips of syrup-doused ice that can be crunched on, while a little puddle of flavored sugar syrup forms in the bottom of the cup, to be enjoyed as a sweet ending. The snoball on the other hand, is just as it sounds, a ball of ice shaved smooth enough to resemble a snowball. Sweet, flavored syrup is swirled on top, and melds perfectly with the “snow,” making each slurp and lick a smooth, sugary flavor bonanza. An otherworldly respite in the hot summer, akin to making snow angels with your tongue.

Especially now that they have the gastro section.

So I'm a Hansen's fan all the way, but the entry is misleading. Mr. Ernest built only a few machines, of which two are still operating, at the Tchoup location. Technically, those are Sno-Bliz machines, and the resulting treat is called a Sno-Bliz, not a Sno-Ball.

You've got to credit George Ortolano, founder of the Sno-Wizard company & inventor of the eponymous machine, with the ubiquity of snowballs. He made his first machine in 1936 & the company has sold thousands.

Texturally, Sno Bliz is finer and fluffier than Sno Wizard's ice.

She mentioned that in the article. I went a few weeks ago and they are still great. Growing up I always got chocolate with condensed milk. Last two times I got the nectar.

Sno balls remind me of my yat cousins when I was a kid. That and cabbage ball. They were always blabbing about eating Sno balls and playing cabbage ball. I thought they were aliens.

I went to a kid’s bday party at Hansen’s a few years ago. They broke out a gas powered sno-ball machine that blew through a F150 bed full of ice in a minute or two. The entire back yard was covered in snow. Pretty impressive for a 80 degree spring day.

Plum Street and Imperial Woodpecker will do off-site snowball parties. Pretty sure Hansen's will too.
