Aldi’s Grocery store coming to Central

I've been to a couple and they are a discount grocery. Kind of trashy, but good prices. The grocery carts are from the 80s.

I think you have to put a quarter in to use a shopping cart and get it back once you return it.

Crappy Little stores. There are 2 with 5 minutes of me but I never go there. They are actually pretty nice stores in Europe.

They have a cult following. My wife shops there. That's all I know. There are fricking facebook pages dedicated to finds there.

It’s like anything else, depends on the clientele. I was in a nice, clean one today. They have some good stuff. Gallon of milk was 2.19.

Unique model. If you are a bargain shopper it’s about the cheapest groceries you can find. Everything is a knock off brand. Their groceries come in bulk assortment boxes. So instead of having baked beans sorted and stocked on a shelf, they’ll get in a box with 5 varieties of baked beans.
Usually only 2 or 3 workers at a time. They don’t have employees to grab carts outside and don’t have to stock much during the day. You can buy paper bags at celheckout for 7 cents, or grab an empty box off a shelf for free. You have to bag or box your own groceries. Super quick checkout since the workers put everything back in the cart.
It’s fine. Older people seem to like that it’s small for a grocery store and basic. Instead of having a wall of eggs and 10 different brands of milk, you have one option for eggs and one brand of skim,2%,whole, or chocolate milk

The Real Superstore on Greenwell Springs used to do this in the 80s but that was also when people generally carried change on them.

Mines gotten better, but she would come back from Aldi with a bunch of random crap that she bought because “it’s such a bargain”. Don’t think that’s how a bargain works..

I’ve only been to Aldo in Europe....do the US stores have the middle aisle with random stuff? From hardware to toys....

Its a brilliant business model.
Groceries are merchandised in their packaging.
You bag your own groceries.
You need a quarter to rent a cart that is refunded when you return the cart.
The cashiers have seats if they choose.
Really low labor overhead means real savings.

Interesting model for sure. They don’t really do much advertising. And at least around here the stores run pretty limited hours. Think they open at 9 and close at 8 so they aren’t paying more than a handful of employees during the day.

There were a number of Lidl built in the Richmond, VA area a couple of years ago. Much bigger than Aldi, carts didn't require a quarter, larger area for random wares and clothing. They also would have fresh baked rolls and bagels. I didn't find their off-label brands to be better than Aldi's off-brand items.

Aldi North is Trader Joe's and
Aldi South is Aldi.
Similar in that both have store brands, that are really name brands with their branding. But they will generally only have 1-2 options for each product. You have to put a deposit for the cart which I think is a good idea. Any good person returns the cart anyway. The issue is having a quarter handy.
