I read that list. Many of those restaurants are worthy of a star but many more, even some I like very much, would get no consideration from Michelin. Parkway is good but a po-boy joint is not getting a star. Port of Call is on that list. I have been going to Port of Call for 50 years, but the Michelin people would freak out if they had to review Port of Call.

Off the top of my head, I can’t think of a single NO restaurant that would get a Michelin Star. And there are many that I absolutely love.

I don’t know about that. I have been to Michelin one stars in Paris and throughout Europe that I would compare New Orleans restaurants favorably to. They are excellent restaurants. They are just not over the top fancy super expensive places. There is a big difference between a one star and a two or three star. Sometimes a one star is my favorite type of restaurant to go to because the food is delicious and you don’t have to declare bankruptcy when your credit card bill comes.

I gravitate towards the casual offshoot of a Michelin star chef. You get great food without the pomp or price.
Like StreetXO instead of DiverXO in Madrid.

I agree, some are not.

Monteverde in Chicago is another good example.

quote:Exactly what it boils down to. They either come and issue a handful of places a star or they don't come at all. Really good food + a good story in a city with a guide gets you a star, and New Orleans has plenty of those.
If they’re coming here, someone has to get star(s).

Which is why I could see Compère Lapin getting a star
I'll celebrate if this happens so I can claim elite culinary status b/c I ate there one time while staying at the hotel

and Brigtsen's are good calls.
Have you seen the condition of Brigsten's dining rooms lately? Or looked at their bar selections and wine list? They aint sniffing a star.

And just the style of food. At Brigtsens you get an entire slab of duck on a plate with sauce lathering it. It’s delicious but not exactly the presentation Michelin goes for. And that’s why I’m fine with Michelin staying away from NO.

I just got back from GW Fins. Fantastic meal. I can say without hesitation that they would be deserving of one star at the very least.

Best fish offerings in the city. Peche does great fish, but GWF has multiple offerings that are all fantastic.

I heard Yellow Bowl in Jeanerette closed today because they didn’t get the Michelin Star after their visit.

I don’t get anything particularly New Orleansy about GWF. Not that it’s a bad thing, but I just feel that place could be downtown in Houston or Chicago or Phoenix.

As far as the local influences at GW Fins, I did notice some last night. They had a lot of fresh local fish from Louisiana or the Gulf. One of the fish dishes was served with ettouffee. They had a BBQ shrimp app. The best dessert was the bread pudding.

I enjoy Brigtsen's, but it's not of Michelin star quality. On some of the main course dishes, the sides are mashed potatoes and sauteed vegetables and those plates are not exactly beautiful. The entrees are good, though, and he does some tasty desserts.

GW Fins is the best place in the city for fresh local fish.

Reading the restaurants that people think should get a star shows me that not many on here understand the criteria nor have been to a Michelin starred restaurant.

I've found this thread to be fairly accurate with the speculation of potential NOLA started restaurants. If Michelin is in fact coming to town to hand out stars, their "criteria" will have to be adjusted somewhat. As they seemed to do in Florida.
And since we're being badasses I bet I've been to more starred restaurants in a month that you have in a lifetime. Probably a week.
