What makes Charlie's "New Orlean-esque" other than just being a steakhouse in New Orleans?

Maybe I am missing what the aim is for New Orleans-esque.

Laid back, loud, not stuffy, not fancy. There's just something about the way they operate. I'd never recommend them for the best steak in the city, as they don't provide that. And as you stated earlier, someone looking at Revolution for a meal isn't cross shopping Charlie's.

But the experience to me and many others I've talked to is NOLA in a nutshell. That's obviously very subjective.

Maybe so. I like Charlies, I just don't see it any different than other steakhouses I have been to around the country. The sides have more flavor, I will say that.

A New Orleans style steakhouse is already going to be tough, I guess Ruth's should be the answer.

Ruth's, Crescent City, and Charlies.

The butter sizzling steaks are very distinctive to New Orleans.

The general atmosphere of Charlies is about as New Orleans as you can get. Yeah, other cities have sort of old school 'working-class nice' type steakhouses, but they will all typically have a real feel of the locale. I don't know where you can point to one and say, 'yeah this feels just like Charlies.' No CURRENT steakhouse in New Orleans fells as much like New Orleans as Charlies. I would say Crescent City to some extent, but it's more unique into itself, as far as atmosphere. Charlies sort of exudes New Orleans.

It feels local, I'll give you that. If that is what is meant by New Orleans-esque then Charlies fits it.

If you already have reservations at R'Evolution, I will not try to talk you out of that.

This may not be exactly New Orleansque, but the thing that used to contribute to the atmosphere at Charlie’s was the grumpy Italian waiters who used to work there.

Just do yourself a favor and go to GW Fins. Their fish will beat any steak.

If you're looking for steak I would go with Chophouse. Doris is great but Chophouse is my favorite.

I’d eat a steak out of CAD’s dorm fridge before I ate one at Charlie’s

Why would you go to GW Fins over Revolution?

Hell, their biscuits will beat about 80% of the steakhouses out there. Big fan.
Stay with R’evolution. Out of special places to celebrate it’s pretty well up there.

Ruth’s is currently the best in the city. Really not even close, imho.

I will say this- and y’all can downvote all you want.

According to our waiter at Ruth’s a few weeks ago, John Besh dines at the Metairie location.

So, up a few notches in my book. FWIW- my book may be a coloring one, tho.

Steak Knife in Lakeview - local, neighborhood atmosphere - truly great steaks, seafood, sides. Thank me later.

What is the deal with Brennan’s I never hear anyone bringing them up. I have not been in the city for several years but use to hear a lot of people talk about them.

Reservations are about three weeks in advance. It's a tough ticket. If you can get one, ask for the table-side filet medallions. It's not on the menu, but available.

Yeah, for me Dickie Brennan's is hard to beat. Also had a great steak at Galatoire's 33.

I am in agreement though, R'evolution is an experience. Also across the street is Arnaud's (favorite).

R'evolution has great steaks as well
