I need a new all around cleaning knife. I have a old buck waterfowler that has been my go to for many years. Looking at getting a new outdoor edge or havalon style knife with the replacement blades. Is there something better? Would like to hear ppls thoughts.

havalon with replaceable razor blades is a complete game changer for me

I use the one with the replacement blades. It's a time saver when cleaning 3 or 4 deer at a time. Unless you just like sharpening knives, which some people do.

I have the Outdoor Edge with replaceable blades and swing out gut blade. It's legit.

Benchmade Steep Country is my current skinner. Works great on ducks, squirrel and deer. Holds an edge for a long time but the s30v can be somewhat of a pain to sharpen.
That being said, I'm never in a situation where I'm cleaning multiple big game animals at a time.

I agree with replaceable. Was hunting this past January and the guy that had one finished his deer way easier then the rest of us with regular knives. That and a battery recip saw for the head.

+1 on the replaceable blades. Cleaned 3 deer this past weekend and those blades were super sharp. It was almost TOO sharp. But i got the hang of it real quick, made skinning a breeze. The only issue i see with it against a regular knife is that it wont handle side load as well for prying stuff. But you shouldnt be using it for that reason anyway

Bought my kids the Outdoor Edge with the replaceable blade and it worked great. We did find that the replaceable blade could be resharpened with a cheap Smith ceramic sharpener from wally world. Never bought new blades

I have been using an outdoor edge butcher kit for years. I just pass the knives on the worksharp from time to time

If you are dead set on replacement bladed knives then go with havalon. My sister gave me the outdoor edge and I don’t like how the blades fit into the blade carrier and how it gets loaded with fat and meat.
If not dead set on havalon I would suggest a custom knife from small custom knife maker built to your specifications.
I doubt anyone is going to look at a havalon 40yrs from now and say “ man this was my Pawpaw’s knife”

Good point. I like my outdoor edge but we have a toolbox full of old knives that my Grandad made 30-40 years ago. It's always neat to pull those knives out and work on a deer with them. I love the ease of pushing a button and getting a new blade but there is something to be said for homemade craftsmanship.

I have and use the Havalon, but I still grab the Dexter beef skinner. I like it for the fact I can use to skin and get into the hip socket to pop the ball joint all with the same knife. I agree that I was not impressed with the Outdoor Edge replacement knife.

I use my regular every day pocket knife to clean and usually break down 4-6 every year. The only caveat is that occasionally I bring a 6" boner from the house to use.
