if you're interested in picking up a .22 for rodents, snakes, outdoor small animals, etc, with very sparing usage: would you favor a revolver type or semi type. .22 is not in my expertice and just wanted opinions from you guys. Appears semi auto's may have a bit more issue with the type of round v a revolver?? Please educate. Much appreciated.

I've got a few 22lrs.

My problem with the revolver is capacity and reloading.

If I were looking for 1 it would likely be the buckmark. Very accurate and can get a couple extra mags to keep on hand. Also, I've never had an issue with my buckmark. In my experience it's more of they type of ammo that causes issues in 22lr, not the action of the gun.

Definitely a revolver. It won’t jam and will shoot any 22lr ammo you can find.

Buckmark as previously said. Not as loud as a revolver, more accurate IMO and holds more rounds.

Ruger Single Six is the answer you are looking for, CB round, ratshot, all of it shoots well.

Since you said "Sparing usage" I would say a revolver. Now if you do plan on plinking as well then I would agree with the buckmark. I have an older .22 revolver I carry in the early season when doing fields and such. I have never had to reload in the field and I don't need to worry about the dust and such with a revolver. Like said it will shoot ANY ammo.

I love my $199 Ruger Wrangler revolver.

The drawback is no suppressor and only six shots. But it’s easy to reload, accurate enough, and solid as a hammer. And I don’t have a suppressor anyway Bc the government makes it such a PITA to get one.

I have a super old colt peacemaker single action chambered in 22 my dad gave me. Its not one of the "replicas"
Came with a western holster and everything.

I bring it all the time to the lease and load with rat shot.

I just took it to requalify for my CHP

I love it.

Ruger single six convertible is the only answer there is IMO. You can shoot everything from ratshot to .22 magnum.

Or if you just want .22 lr, a ruger wrangler is like $200 and will also shoot any .22 lr ammo reliably and accurately.

Semi auto .22's are pretty unreliable without the right ammo. They're fun, just not very reliable.

I have a Ruger vaquero single six (revolver) and a Browning Buckmark. I love them both and they are incredibly fun to shoot. I am a terrible shot with 99% of pistols that I shoot but can hit a dime at 20 yards with the Buckmark for some reason. The Ruger is fun but I’m a terrible shot at anything more than 15 or so feet.

I have a heritage revolver with .22lr and .22wmr cylinders. It stays in a leather holster that wanders around in my truck, including on the floor board, between the seats, and pretty much anywhere it can collect dust/debris. One time I pulled it out to shoot a possum in the driveway and a mcdonalds french fry fell out the holster. Still shot. I've been on a tractor for days with it on my hip only to have it completely covered in dust and leaves. Still shoots every time. It's in no way the quality of a ruger or browning, but it shoots just fine and was about $110

I have a H&R Model 929, 9 shot revolver that I bought around 1978. Have had zero issues with it.
It’s perfect for what you mentioned.

Taurus TX22
S&W M&P 22 full size or compact (I have full size)
Or give the new FN502 a little while to work out any bugs. It looks amazing.

Can’t go wrong with a Buckmark, Ruger Mark whatever.

Revolver of any make will work. Revolver will make rat shot easier to deal with but I don’t care about killing snakes anyway (except rattlers).

I love my full-size M&P 22 (early model made by Walther)….but the capacity and reports of reliability of the Taurus TX22 would make me look at it first. It’s also very reasonably priced.

But if I had nothing right now, I would wait and keep an eye on the new FN 502. If reports continue to be as good as they are now, it’s what I would spend the money on (it won’t be cheap though).
