Hearing Noble had scheduled helicopters for pick up but flights were getting canceled on them. They ended up not being able to secure replacement pickups. I’m sure it was a mad scramble but at some point it became clear to Noble/Shell that helicopter evacuation was just not going to happen.

Poor contingency planning? Yep.

Depends on what generation drill ship it is but I’d bet they would’ve made 15+knots heading west. I ran to the west well before the storm arrived and we had a 4 knot following current pushing us almost all the way to Galveston

Captain obviously lacks testicular fortitude and job scared. OIM and Manager probably pushed the Captain to continue operations until too late. Capt should have told them to pound sand!

A drilling baw would have to answer that question. I’m just the bus driver. But I think there is more to it than just dropping the riser. It takes time to secure the well in order to detach. It sounds like the decision needed to be made much sooner than it was

15+knots

Ida was moving faster than that, probably can't do that after the seas get rough

Ok, how long does it take to disconnect the ship from the 1000' of riser? At what point with wind speed and waive height would it be too dangerous to try to disconnect?
it can take a couple days to abandon the well especially if it’s really deep water. Ida was moving pretty quick so it was a tight window

This is on the Captain.

You get off nonessential personal but the core crew, 60ish or so people, stay on the rig.

The should have been unlatched and headed west by Friday.

I’m currently working in n a large drillship in the GoM. Although I am on my days off , I know exactly what those guys went through . These drill ships are seven to eight hundred foot long . This does not necessarily mean I would like to ride out a hurricane on one of these drillships. These days a risk reward matrix is used. At one and half to two million dollars a day burn rate these companies are willing to take risks . and this is what happens as an in results. Law suits are a dropping the bucket for these greedy companies. I hate to say it but one day the worse will happen .

I know its different companies and somewhat different circumstances, but this seems like a absolutely terrible optics in the wake of the Seacor.

I would bet my last dollar Shell and/or Noble already informed all crew if they post any footage without their consent they will be fired.

The captain is the keeper of the ship and can override all decisions made by office personnel. He could have made the call to unlatch and move the ship to a safer location earlier so they could have enough time. I'm sure his decision was influenced by the folks in the office. But ultimately the captain will be scapegoated and the folks in the offices "the real decision makers" will just write checks to make this all go away and wont be touched.

We fished this ship Wednesday night, some of the crew were down on a lower deck trying to catch tuna after the sun went down. The Captain we were fishing with knew at least a couple of the guys on the ship. They were live streaming on some platform as he was showing me the live stream of us when we would drift by where they were fishing. We cut up with them for several hours every time we drifted by them. Little did they know they would be fighting for their lives in a matter of hours. I hope all are well and get due compensation. They were located just a few miles from the Mars platform.

I thought O&G companies had "private meteorologists" hired to give info on this kinda stuff, like time frames to GTFO of dodge.

Drill ships can haul arse. But you can’t haul arse with 1000’ of riser connected to you.

Which means it was piss poor planning and someone pushing them to continue regular operations for longer than they should have. Now that additional day of work that they completed will probably cost them several months and millions.

Video from facebook. So brutal especially given the recent Seacor incident.

Noble may get sued

You can guar-on-tee that! There's no excuse for this kind of negligence in this day and time.
