That feeling has to be surreal. You decided to stay, but as conditions deteriorate you know your only exit out of that situation is now blocked.
It’s ride or die from here, and sadly “die” is the more probable outcome.

They may as well go break into Artie’s and ride the lightening the right way……probably would be the last thing they ever do either way.

Maybe already been mentioned in this thread, but news I’m watching just said they even evacuated the Coast Guard there, and said that had never been down before.

What would be the purpose of staying?
Property protection from looters?
Obviously not very smart, it's just the way it is for some of the older folks who live there.

The stories of Hurricane Audrey (1957) should be required reading in our costal parish schools. Incredible stories, almost 500 people died. Many thought they had time to evacuate in the morning but instead they woke up to water in their house. Many stories of survivors watching families members drown, some road it out in trees, some floated on ice boxes, doors, whatever they could find.
They floated miles inland and once the storm died down they had to fight off more snakes than they ever saw and angry cows.

for the next 48-72 hours, those folks are on their own. I am sure the parish made that pretty clear.

When Katrina hit Dauphin Island, AL was just off the eyewall on the NE quadrant.
The east end was protected by Pelican island but the west end was not.
The west end was pushed north by about 100-200 yards.
ETA: also a cut was formed that ended up being around .25 - .5 miles wide

There are also 24 first responders staying. Wtf?

Surprisingly the winds and surge even in the bad storms kill very very few people. What generally kills people in bad hurricanes is drowning, accidents, and then the aftermath in looting and violence. Obviously if you are elderly and mobility is an issue staying is extremely dumb. If you are younger the chances of survival are almost 100%, it’s just gonna be hell and idiotic.
I’d bet more people die in the aftermath killing each other in the looting and survival then the storm actually gets.

I grew up with this. Never knew people in SELA were ignorant to this.
The situation in Nola this morning had a very surreal Audrey vibe (with people waking up to a monster approaching much more quickly when they thought they still had time).
