Surprises me too, and I live here. I would have never guessed AL had a bigger population than LA with the numbers that OP posted for comparison.

But now that I think about it there are several places in AL with significant population (relatively speaking)
Bham
Montgomery
Tuscaloosa
Auburn/Opelika is just under 100k
Huntsville
Mobile

2.98 million people in MS
4.90 million people in AL (this surprised me)

Can we look at metropolitan area population, rather than city population?

City population is often misleading when looking at size of cities.

As a follow up: Louisiana's second largest city, Baton Rouge (224k), would be the largest city in the following states:

Alabama - Birmingham (212k)
Arkansas - Little Rock (193k)
Connecticut - Bridgeport (144k)
Delaware - Wilmington (71k)
Idaho - Boise (206k)
Iowa - Des Moines (215k)
Maine - Portland (66k)
Mississippi - Jackson (174k)
Montana - Billings (104k)
New Hampshire - Manchester (109k)
North Dakota - Fargo (106k)
Rhode Island - Providence (178k)
South Carolina - Charleston (129k)
South Dakota - Sioux Falls (154k)
Utah - Salt Lake City (186k)
Vermont - Burlington (42k)
West Virginia - Charleston (51k)
Wyoming - Cheyenne (59k)

Now do the metro population of those cities.

Salt Lake City alone has a metro population of three million.

I mean, would you want to live in NOLA proper? No thanks

Can't speak to Wilmington though.

A quick Google search shows it's right around 300K.

Can confirm. They have a decent area downtown (Chase Center- aka Biden headquarters) but all around it is a shithole.

The convenient stores around downtown are all the type that have glass around the cashier and you can’t go all the way in if that tells you anything. I was walking to one, asked a cop where the nearest one was and he insisted on bringing me there. Didn’t want any issues with tourists

the "population" of a city but do not give you the population of the "greater" area.
I just had this conversation with my fiancée the other day. We were watching the first episode of Hard Knocks, and she wondered how big Pittsburgh was. I looked it up and told her 300,000, and she wondered how they had an NFL team.

I gave her a comparison with the first city that came to mind as a potential comp, Milwaukee, which has a pop. of 577,000. The metro areas are 2.3m and 1.5m respectively, so Pitt is actually a larger market.

Populations for city propers can be very misleading.

I can agree with this... I live in the Cincinnati area and the population of Cincinnati is just a tad over 300K, but in the metro area, it is around 2.2 million, so only 13% of the metro lives IN Cincinnati, but the borders blur easily in this town.
