Man, what an awesome, awesome movie. I watched it this weekend for the first time in years, and it's just so good. And I saw it mentioned in the "Obscure movies that are good" thread as well.

For those unfamiliar with it, it's genre is hard to define really (Wiki calls it a neo-noir crime thriller). It's got Josh Hartnett, Bruce Willis, Lucy Liu, Ben Kingsley, and Morgan Freeman (even has Bubba from Forrest Gump in it). Describing the movie is a little tough without spoiling anything, but this one is okay:
quote:

It revolves around an innocent man dragged into the middle of a war being plotted by two of New York City's rival crime bosses.

But even that doesn't accurately describe things.

Anyway, it's kinda funny at times, brutal at times, clever at times, etc. And it's one of those movies that is sort of confusing throughout the movie, but everything literally comes together perfectly at the end. And even though everything is explained to the detail, it doesn't feel cheap and the payoff is great.

Hartnett is solid in it. As are Kingsley and Freeman. Willis isn't great, but it makes sense as to why. And Lucy Liu...I'm not usually a huge fan of hers, but she is just cute as frick in it for some reason.

It wasn't a huge movie (although it did decent at the box office). I think the name of the movie didn't help, as it wasn't clear what the hell it was about (which makes sense since it's hard to even explain it once you've seen it). But it is great and well worth the watch. I'd argue you should watch it without watching a trailer or reading too much about it, as to not spoil things (and there are so many different things to spoil).

Any other fans of this Kansas City Shuffle?

Yeah I love this movie. I usually find some time to rewatch it once a year.

Very Guy Richie-esque, to the point where they should honestly have given him a producer credit

One of my favorite movies.

Agreed with you on Lucy Liu, I wasn't a fan of her until I saw this.

Highly recommend to anyone.

I remember seeing it in the theater and not thinking much of it, but I was with a hot chick so I wasn't really paying attention as well as I should

One of my favorite movies. One of the first movies I mention when someone asks for "less popular" movie recs.

One of the best movies to come out of the Aughts. Should be considered an alltime classic

you should also check out Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Another exceptional movie from the same era with a similar style to LNS.

Something about the cinematography/color threw me off and I had trouble getting into it the first time I saw it. Then i rewatched it and loved it. I watch it for a few minutes every time it’s on encore or starz which is almost every day.

Pretty much everyone on the board (and in general) who has seen it, it's pretty unanimous from what I've gathered over the years. It's a damn good flick.

"Why do they call him 'The Rabbi'?"
"Because he's a rabbi."

"Why do they call him 'The Fairy'?"
"Because he's a fairy."
"What, he's got wings, he can fly, he sprinkles magic dust all over the place?"
"He's a homosexual."

"Who are you?"
"I'm The Boss."
"I thought he was The Boss."
"Why? Do we look alike?"

Slevin was marketed really weird. They teased it as a slapstick Josh Hartnett comedy. I had no interest in seeing it, but it's one of my favorites. Last 20 minutes and the score took it from a 7 to a 9

I was dragged to see LNS in theaters by a girl I was dating that wanted to see it only because Josh Hartnett was in it. I didn’t know a thing about it. I loved it that night, and still love it to this day. It’s so good.

Did they? What’s weird is I honestly don’t remember any of the marketing for it. I’m not even sure I ever knew what it was when it was in theaters.

And I remember not liking Hartnett’s character the first time I watched it. I was like why is this idiot waltzing around like he doesn’t give a shite about anything. And then at the end I was like oh okay, nevermind.

Speaking of Harnett: 40 days and 40 nights is good and a fun artifact of the first dot com boom. I’ll die on that hill
