Is it though. I get its possible is car got wedged by another. But was he just sitting under the bridge waiting it out? Or did he drive through deep water with stalled vehickes already there?
The water was so deep that there would be no driving through it. Like driving full speed into a pond. The first car drives in, is stuck. The cars behind him pile on, also stuck and just bobbing around in the indentation in the road, bumping into each other, probably with about 8 feet of water.

WE are all DARWINIAN SUPER HEROES. I get that. We are bullet-proof to stupid human judgement because we have all evolved past that. Personally, I have not sustained a self-inflicted injury since 1977. So to be clear, I , like the rest of the OT, is a master of the universe and impervious to the mistakes of the sea of idiots around me.
I deeply regret pointing out that the freakish amount of rain, on my daughter's HS graduation night of all nights, which had her seeking high ground just around the corner from this, and which had the water level at my nearby home TWICE as high as Gustav, may have caused a human being to make a simple mistake which lead to his death.
Shame on me. This kind of perspective is clearly unwarranted.

Uhm I've worked in the area for 20+ years and have never seen the bluebonnet underpass flooded. To say the area is known to flood is questionable.

It’s possible this individual was deficient in the IQ department but it’s also possible someone wrecked into him and trapped him, and then didn’t call the police and just left. That would make them criminally liable for his death.

Seriously, how do you not get out of the car once you see water entering your floor board or your car starts floating?
I can only assume the guy panicked and maybe his doors were locked and electric unlatch and windows did not work. Maybe couldn't get the door open even if there is a mechanical connection to unlock the door when you pull the handle (I think most have this on the drivers door).
Can only speculate, but I'm guessing panic had a lot to do with it.

If she and her husband have lived in Baton Rouge for more than 5 minutes, then they know it floods there everytime it rains and he as a fricking idiot for driving into a known hazard. I really hate plaintiff's lawyers.

People drowning in their cars is common during flooding events
I couldn't tell you the specifics of why either but this isn't some one off event

I mean a woman is looking for some restitution for her husband drowning to death in a horrific way. Whether there were steps he could have taken to save himself or not (who among us hasn't made a mistake before), it's a tragedy.
It's a little disgusting how some on here are so quick to blame the dead. I'd like to give the man the benefit of the doubt in saying he probably tried not to die.

Harumpf! All I know is that my death, and ALL OT deaths will be noble and heroic and they will write great epics about us and our many brave deeds. You can take your humanity, common sense and compassion elsewhere, baw. Here, we judge the lessers. And find them sadly wanting.

Tough situation...I don't know the circumstances, but this appeared to be a situation like the old video of the vehicles following one another over the side of a collapsed bridge.
I keep a combination glass breaker/seatbelt cutter attached to my steering wheel- just in case.

This is quite false

How much blame does she place on her husband for driving into the situation that killed him?
Louisiana is a comparative fault state, so very possible he will be taxed fault. I think he bears the same fault as the city. 50/50

The fact that there are no warnings about the possibility of high water and the sheriff or city police didn't barricade that underpass earlier in the evening is inexcusable. So what if he lived in Gonzales. He may never have set foot in BR. No one knows the reasons why he was on Bluebonnet and the overnight pictures and video of the water were impressive. I can see how it played out. He probably hit that wall of water at 45-50 in the downpour. And never saw it coming. That probably knocked him out and with few on the road no one saw him go in. It's very sad. But if barricades and lights/signage had been up maybe he doesn't have such a tragic ending.

Every Tom Dick and Harry in the Tri-Parish area knows this spot floods every time it rains. At what point do we own up to our own personal mistakes and move along.

Say a roadway section of a bridge falls down every time there’s high wind. This happens a few times a year. Everyone “should” know not to drive on that bridge if the wind is blowing.
But the same section of bridge keeps being put up - and the government, who is responsible for the bridge, doesn’t fix the issue - wouldn’t it be the government’s fault and not the driver’s?
I’m all for personal responsibility. But at what point do you point at the government and say “you are in charge, this happens regularly, and you haven’t tried to fix it”? What should come from this is a solution to the problem, not a payday.

I've never seen Bluebonnet flood like that.
Acadian and the Governor's Mansion curve at I-110...yes. But not Bluebonnet.

Those underpasses should be changed to over passes or raise the train tracks. Acadian has flooded long enough at that underpass. Hopefully this lawsuit will get some things changed.

So someone watched this man struggle and go under but no rescue related to this particular person was efforted by bystanders, police, rescue etc? Wow!! Now that's pitiful on our town as a whole.
