Alzheimer is a cruel disease

My mom is 84 years and was diagnosed with Alzheimer in 2013. She progressed to the end stage of the disease.
I saw her today and it broke my heart. She can't swallow food or drink water anymore. They had to put in an IV.
During all the time, the sole caregiver was my dad who is almost 90 years and in great shape. He loves her so much that he refused to put her at a long term care facility.
Many times over the year, i wished she would remember me because I knew if she did, she'll be ecstatic to see me.
She raised 3 boys. She was a good mother. and always stood by my dads side.
Moms are the best.
Anyone had to deal with loved one with Alzheimer?

My dad and grandma had dementia.
It’s cruel as hell and very sad to watch.

My grandmother, but her faculties went quickly. It was sad to watch.
Sorry, man. Just love and talk to her even if you're not sure she's listening.

Both grandmothers, one grandfather, and two aunts.
The reality that I will more than likely put my wife and kids through that without knowing it one day is soul crushing.
Just be there for them and their caregivers and remember the good times. frick that disease.

that's what worries me. In our family lineage only females has gotten the disease and I am already terrified for my little girl.

Man, that shite is heartbreaking. Prayers for you and your family.
A while ago a friend lost his dad to Alzheimer’s. When I saw him at the funeral, I tlold him that I was sorry that he lost his dad. His reply was “ thanks, but I lost my dad years ago”

My great aunt lived to be 101, and had this disease for over a decade. She was a total vegetable for the last 5-6 years hunched over on a chair.

I don’t know what to say here, I lost my Pop in 1992 when he was a 59 and my mom is nearing 90 now and I’m her caregiver.
At least the end is near for you soon, not that that makes it sensitive or easier it just is what it is.
God bless you brother and do the best you can.

Mine both died in their early 70's when I was 38. Their illnesses only lasted four months and six months.
It was a shock to loose them when I was that young, but they and I were spared the horror of dementia (which I saw with my inlaws).
We have got to begin to understand that death happens and probably shouldn't always be interfered with.

Amen, brother..Grandma had it. It was devastating.

Grandmother has it. My grandpaw died of parkinson's about 2 years ago and we had to put her in a home. Every time we go and see her she asks where he is. I would always be honest with her and tell her that he had passed away, but after the 10th or so time of literally breaking her heart again and again, I just started lying and telling her he was on his way.
Its fricking awful.

My mom was diagnosed with early onset at 54. We had sitters with her at 57 and finally at 60 had to put her in a nursing home. She died at age 61. It was terrible. She had a masters degree in education and very good job as an assistant principal. fricking terrible disease. My kids were robbed of a great grandmother. I feel for anyone who has a family member with it.

I lost my Father to it two years ago. It’s horrible beyond words. I’m sorry you and your folks are having to go through this.
I honestly think modern medicine is prolonging life too far for many people. We were never intended to outlive our minds.

My prayers are with you. My mother's mom had Dementia and my dad's mom had Alzheimers. It was very very sad for me to see them both decline as the years went by. It was more difficult for me with my dad's mother as she did not recognize me. My mom's mother recognized me through it all. Then years later, my aunt was diagnosed with Dementia at the age of 65. She went downhill very quickly.

Mother died from Alzheimer’s…dad died five weeks later from dementia…
Go see her as often as possible ..at this point bring a popsicle or something…they forget how to eat and later swallow (when they stop fluids it is close to the end)
My mom was happy till the end so just talk about the good old days…she knew who we were till the end…my dad got dementia bad and drifted into his childhood and really did not know us at the end…
Always remember…if things get tense …it is the dementia and not the person …as bad as it is …you are going to miss even these moments…

My grandmother died from it. Then a year later her body died. I’d rather get hit by a train. Dear God please don’t let me get that disease.
