He actually served bravely and honorably.

McCain? Questionable.

Dole was the equivalent of 2008 McCain. “It’s his turn.” “Oh and he was in the military!!”

I'd say the same applied to Romney in 2012

He wasn't elderly but he sort of became the "default" candidate because he had been around before

I always thought of him as more of the sacrificial lamb since nobody was beating slick Willy that year.

Dole was Biden without the media/social media machine to carry him.

No repub was beating clinton in 1996.

The economy was hot, bill was an incredible politician who convinced a whole lot of folks that he was a "new type of democrat" aka moderate and reasonable.

This.

You can't discount that even if Bill Clinton was as far left as his wife, he was smart enough to not show it. James Carville was also a master at advising him.

Remember, both welfare reform and the last balanced budget came under Clinton, he signed both. He might not have been originally been on board, but he was smart enough when he knew Newt Gingrich's policies had the support of a majority of the voting, taxpaying class, to jump on it and take credit.

Bill Clinton was a realist, and having that quality as a President will actually make him look good in the eyes of history compared to some of the other Presidents. He wasn't a disaster like Jimmy Carter or Lyndon Johnson.

The sad thing is, after the election he went on talk shows and was funny, personable, self-deprecating and really likable. If he'd presented that side of himself before, he might gave done better.

Bob Dole was supportive of MAGA when others weren't.

Once Clinton won in 1992, the party basically went into hibernation, figuring it was easier to hold resources for 2000 and beat a Dem candidate rather than try and beat a Dem incumbent.

That they had W in their back pocket as the candidate of choice backed that up as he needed more time as governor of Texas to build credibility before a national run.

Dole was actually worth a shite, just 15-20 years too old.

My favorite part was when he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom a few months after the election (the week of Clinton's 2nd inauguration). Link to remarks

As noted above, pit bull Pat Buchanan was the best choice at the time, IMO.

I agree.

Our system locks good people like Buchanan out. We get crooks and cowards instead.

I consider myself a libertarian, but I would never vote for a .5% libertarian candidate. The Libertarian party is a train wreck and probably always will be.

First election I followed as a kid (seventh grade). Colin Powell could have had the nod if he wanted it.

I think too many people assume all of Perot's votes would've gone to Bush or Dole of he didn't run.

Clinton destroyed Bush when he was up for re-election. Dole never had a chance. Did make for some funny Norm Macdonald skits on SNL though.

GOP running Dole + Mitt + McCain is what eventually created President Trump. How mad can we really be at them?
