Let's just say average family, small town Louisiana, this time period we will stick with white people, for obvious reasons. You think people then were happier or much more pissed off everyday? Did dads spend anymore time with their kids back then as today. Got to thinking, 2 of my son's friends mentioned their dads sit on their phones and laptops almost the entire time they are home from work. I was thinking about times way back, like Little House on the Prairie, where the dad was teaching his daughters about life and living on the land.
Perhaps dads and moms were always too exhausted irl though back in those days to be fun or funny parents with their kids. So you had to worry about illness more, manual labor just to survive, but perhaps living in the country you had peace with the land, more of a present in the moment life? I wonder if people joked around and goofed off with each other like we do today, or especially before social media turned and made every one so dang serious.

Dad was working 16 hours a day and praying he didn’t break his leg and lose his family’s sole source of income.

Shitting in a 100+ degree outhouse sounds pretty miserable.

It was a hell of alot easier to carry a gun on your hip. That's for certain.

Just like now. There was a lot of modern technology that wasn’t available to previous generations; medicine had made huge strides; and the average person was thankful he lived in such enlightened times.

The average life expectancy in the 1880s was mid 40s.
Not exactly easy living.
Not exactly easy living.

Wearing suits every single day to work and top hats had to be fricking unbearable during the summer.

Body odor. Lots of body odor.

For all of human history, you label 140 years ago as the "old" days?

No air conditioning, no thank you

Living a self sustaining lifestyle of farming and hunting in a small community doesn’t seem that bad on the surface. Living and working in a factory in a major city sounds like hell.

That stat is far more representative of infant mortality than it is of the length of the lives who made it to the "living a life" part.

My grandfather was a literal hillbilly with a dozen brothers and sisters and grew up in a shack with literal dirt floors. I’d imagine it was no different than the conditions he grew up in and escaped. Only been to one family reunion with his side of the family, and my first cousins and I could hardly believe we were related to these people. Was probably a good place to pick up methed out toothless chicks to bang.

I'd be willing to bet that outside of telling the kids to get their asses to school or outside to play, parents didn't have a whole lot of conversations with their kids back then either.
I'd imagine once a kid hit 10 or 11 they'd be expected to take on chores around the house, hell a bit would probably be expected to bring in a little money.
