Do you fly out of New Orleans or your local airport?

Just wondering what most people do on here, for those that live in the region.

When I was in BR I still tended to use MSY, as did all of my friends. I think I used BTR once to fly to Dallas as its one of the few routes directly served from there. I've heard similar from people living as far as Lafayette or in the Biloxi area, that most people don't really use their local airport and will tend to travel to New Orleans to fly because of the much greater number of direct routes and even more things to do in the terminal.

As MSY continues to grow with the new terminal and traffic numbers is there anything else the smaller airports in the region can do to grow or is it simply about just surviving now?

I’m ascension parish. I fly wherever has the direct flight I need.

If no direct flight, I’ll use BTR.

If you are flying domestic There is no reason not to fly into BR if thats where you are headed.

I always fly out of BR. I find that the time spent driving to/from New Orleans and the money you pay to park cancels out anything that might make MSY better. I also just like BR airport for how easy it is.

Edit - of course, for some reason.. people think it’s totally normal to buy tickets from MSY and then bother their friends/family for rides there/pick ups.

For overseas flights MSY is much cheaper than JAN, people from central MS routinely drive to NOLA to fly out of there.

All things being equal, I fly out of BTR if I can. I only go to MSY if there is a significant price difference, a direct flight or better flight times than I can find out of BTR.

I live in alexandria la and I'll drive to nola about half the time bc of significantly cheaper fares. If it's just 100-300ish difference I'll fly out local but when it's much more than that I find it to be worth the drive over to nola to fly.

GPT is way easier for me, but not as many options as MSY. If GPT had Southwest, I'd fly from there much more frequently.

I think some of that changes now with Southwest and Frontier starting back at JAN. That airport has been reeling for years now mainly due to incompetent management. Now at least surrounding counties and state have a say in what goes on there.

I'm loyal to Delta and only use MSY if there is a direct Delta flight to where I'm headed or if I'm going West and it does not make sense to connect through ATL. I don't mind connecting through ATL--just head to One Flew South or the Sky Club to pass the time.

fly out of Lafayette when able but if flights are limited and MSY has a direct flight, will go that route sometimes.

I fly out of BTR for the convenience unless there's just a much better option out of MSY, like the direct Southwest flight to Austin. I normally fly Delta, and a lot of the time if you depart from MSY you still have to connect in ATL so it makes no sense to drive to Nola. I love BTR for how easy it is and try to fly in and out of there as much as I can.

Although it generally is cheaper, it's not near cheap enough for me to add 6 hours to my travel time in order to fly out of MSY.

concur, the airport has been greatly underutilized. There is a ton of potential there.

When your local passenger numbers have fallen back to levels not recorded since the early 1990s, and have remained there despite recent years of robust economy, there's a problem somewhere.

It just depends. We typically look at flight options for both. If the schedule is much better for MSY, or cheaper, we do MSY. Living in Lafayette when we’re planning a trip we typically looks at flights from LFT, MSY, and IAH. Last year we flew into Amsterdam and back home from Paris. We found direct flights for outbound and inbound directly to/from IAH, so we chose that, rather than connecting and flying out of LFT.

For me it’s 35 min to JAN, 50 to MLU, 3.5 to MEM, 3.5 to LIT, 3.5 to BHM, and 3 to MSY. None really save me enough money to consider driving to them. MLU is sometimes cheaper than JAN, and it’s worlds better as far as parking, ease of security, and competency of staff. I greatly prefer MLU over JAN.
