Buying a car for my son's 16th birthday

This is a family tradition of ours passed down from generation to generation since the first Ford motor was made. We are looking at a car that costs less than 4 grand if possible
We were looking at 1995 Hyundai, Honda or Toyota Corolla. What car would be ideal for him to get from school to work, baws?

A fricking '95 Hyundai? He'd be better off walking to and from work/school.
Christ, man...it's your kid. Spend a few grand more and make sure he's safe.

Don’t do that to your son. Either get him a good car or give him 4K in Uber/Lyft credits

Good luck finding anything worth crap for $4k.
I just sold a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 110K, in great shape for $4.5K and had 4 folks lined up to buy. It was on craiglist for less than 45 min.
Seems like a tough time to buy. I'd go with the lowest mileage Honda $4k can afford, which will probably be 200k+.

4k isn't gonna buy much these days.

What’s the tradition? Buying a shite old car for a kid?
How’s he gonna get any pussy in a 95 Hyundai

That car is 26 years old. You are doing him a service by buying him a clunker but damn. Get him something 10 years old that is safe and won't break down weekly.

He wants a student, not a grandchild.

Corollas are reliable and easy to work on. I had a 97 Corolla I kept to 265K. Still had plenty of life left. General routine maintenance kept it ticking fine But I have two other vehicles and just didn't need it, sold it to a buddy who's kid needed transportation.

95 is pretty old in 2021.
You should be able to get an early 00's civic for that range and have a more comfortable car.
The 90s economy cars are not nice by today's standards.
Tacoma is a good choice. I've had mine 10 years and put 100 000 miles on it abs the book value has actually gone up from what I paid for it ten years ago.

Don’t buy a 16 year old inexperienced new driver a new car. They are going to hit curbs, mailboxes, back into things. I’ve been very lucky that my oldest has only hit two things, both in a parking lot so he was moving slowly and the only damage is to the car and poles that he hit, so no kids were hurt.
