Buy a modern ‘collector’ car?

So my friend lives in CO, he mentioned he wants a toy car to drive like once a month, but keep for years and appreciate in value. He seems locked in on a Dodge Challenger Demon, since they were made for one year (2018) and only limited production. I had no input since not sure what a modern vehicle (post 2000s) would do in market, and I would assume cars just get faster, better, and less ‘collectible’ every few years. Anyone have any suggestion or dealt with this?

Id find something limited production of something. Demon probably works.
Price range is a big decider as is what he wants to do.
Buy something you love that way even if it doesn't pan out you own a car you liked.
Also, overall cars are terrible "investments"

If it’s modern and described as a “collector” car ..... it’s not likely to be valuable.
Stuff that is valuable is the stuff that everyone throws away thinking it has no value.

The Demon isn't a bad idea but have your friend look at the 2005 & 2006 Ford GT especially on gulf livery.

Yes. 125k vs 400k....

Demons are novel and somewhat rare, but if I wanted a modern hotrod to hold on to, I’d get a Shelby Cobra with the 5.2 Voodoo flat crank motor and send it to fathouse for a twin turbo install kit. The car is a work of art (unlike the demon) and 1350 HP after the mod.

I bought a 2020 Vette. It was extremely low production and a great car. They already bring top dollar because of this.

Maybe a LandCruiser? I know it’s the “last year” this year, but it’s sure to come back in some form. Doubt we will ever see a V8 in one in the future.
Honestly, in 10-20 years, once boomers go broke or die, I think there will be a big drop off in collector car values.

Yes and no. The Demon may hold value due to one year of production in addition to the obvious. The 69 Camaro is highly desired for the same reason too, and look at the money a 69 ZL1 will bring.
Point is, it’s not always

If you look at auctions...style matters but horsepower makes the difference ....

Early 2000’s 911 or go holy grail and get the last of the air cooled 911 from the late 1990’s.

Several people are stuck with Mazda Miatas and Buick Reattas who had the same thought process.

There are several that will appreciate that aren't extremely expensive right now.
Dodge Demon if he can get one right now, if not, it's probably too late.
Dodge Challenger Hellcat non-widebody is another gem, red-eye especially and I would take it over the Demon.
Porsche 981/987 Cayman
Mazda MX-5 ND2 RF

What’s modern? I think BMW E39 M5s will continue to increase in value. Also any Ferrari built in the last 15 years with a 6 speed manual.

Tell him to out his money in the stock market.
He "may" double his money in 40 years with that Dodge. Then again, he may not. Either way, it's a shitty investment.
