Those oil change places could charge $100 for a basic oil change, I’d still go

Went to get the oil changed in my daughter’s car today, both places close to me were closed, so I figured I’d do it myself. Hell, I worked at Jiffy Lube 30 years ago, I can change oil in my sleep.
First off, what ever happened to 99¢ quart of oil? The regular 10-30 is $4+ a quart. Granted, it’s been 20+ years since I’ve bought oil.
It was near $25 for oil and filter. The car is a Nissan Versa Note. My floorjack barely fit under the car.
It was just a pain in the arse to change it. The filter is in a bad spot, etc.
Paying someone $45 to do it in 5 minutes is well worth it.

Depends on where you go. I wouldn't trust some of those crack heads that work at those places to even touch my car

Are you trying to sell us the daughter or the car here?

It cost me $75 to get mine done the other day. Seems like it was $50-55 last time I got it done.

It’s about $70 to get it done in my Dodge.

You ain't no man if you need a floor jack to change your oil. Lift that thing up.

Yeah, my mother has one of those Lincoln crossovers, and you have to take a skid plate off to even get to the filter. Costs like $55 to go to the local 10 minutes oil change spots. Worth every penny.

I paid about $18 for 5 quarts and $3.50 for a filter. Changed it myself.

I don’t miss the $390 bill at Brian Harris.

May sound dumb to some here but I use SWEPCO synthetic and don't change again until 15K. I don't like the headache you described either.

I use a long life synthetic in my Lexus, change it every 10k miles, but I bring it to get it done. I done do it.

I know of 2 different people totally unrelated to each other that have worked at those type places at 2 different time periods and both told me the same story. If people pay cash, they sometimes just shine up the filter to make it look new and send them on their way.
I don't have any clue the accuracy of those stories, but both were really shady individuals that I wouldn't put anything past them, at least at that point in their lives. TWIW

I changed my own oil for most of my life but just got tired of it. Having to dispose of the oil etc. If it costs me $50-100 more per year to have someone else do it so be it.

I’m calling BS, because you don’t pay until they are done. How do they know the method of payment?
I use two places, 5 Min Oil Change and a place in Gonzales. It’s locally owned, just one shop, bunch of good old boys working there.

Seems like newer cars were designed to make everything as difficult as possible so you'd bring it to the dealer for service instead of DIY.

I get mine done at the dealership. I run Mobil 1 in my 2020 Sierra. I put a ton of miles on it so using the Mobil 1. I don’t trust the quick lube places.

Depending on your driving duty cycle an extended drain like that is no issue with quality oil in a modern engine matches with a good filter.
Lots of cold restarts, very dusty conditions, towing and other factors can certainly increase the need for more frequent drains. I suggest anyone doing long drains like that get a used oil analysis from a firm like Blackstone every couple of drains. They are easy, inexpensive and give a wealth of information about the health of your engine and the oil quality at the end of the drain. To help with the interpretation of the results just head over to bobistheoilguy.com The forum there has everything from hobbyist to industry engineers who live and breathe tribilogy.

The ones around BR are owned by a group out of TX. They just opened one in Zachary. No horror stories yet.
