One of the most outstanding southern humorists of the 20th century died at age 47. Some of his books include:
Don't Sit Under the Grits Tree With Anyone Else but Me
If Love Were Oil, I'd Be About a Quart Low
Elvis Is Dead and I Don't Feel So Good Myself
Shoot Low Boys - They're Riding Shetland Ponies
Don't Bend Over in the Garden, Granny - You Know Them Taters Got Eyes
You Can't Put No Boogie Woogie on the King of Rock and Roll
I Haven't Understood Anything Since 1962 and Other Nekkid Truths
a number of others along with several comedy albums

He was an occasional guest on Designing Women

Have all of those books on my shelf right now. Reading Grizzard in my late teens / early 20s was enlightening for this old country boy.

A national treasure and a great representation of a by gawd true southern man.
He'd be canceled so damn fast in today's society.

Naked means you don't have no clothes on
Nekkid means you don't have no clothes on and you're up to something
Grizzard was a treasure

I’m going to re read one of his books today. They always pick me up.
Except when he writes about being “ crying about your Daddy drunk “. It tears me up.

Yeah, I thought twice about including Richard Nixon in the list, thereby disparaging the other members, but he was President, so it was worth including him.

Started reading his columns in the mid 80's. Truly a classic.
A dog named Catfish, liked ice in his coke, and no love for Chicago.
Saw him in the Centroplex 1990 or so.

Yankees don't understand that the Southern way of talking is a language of nuance. What we can do in the South is we can take a word and change it just a little bit and make it mean something altogether different.

The article he wrote about the guy who took in drunks (including his dad) was one of the best ever written.

quote:Around 1987 or 1988 Grizzard came to Baton Rouge to be the guest speaker at the Baton Rouge Chamber of Commerce annual meeting.
Saw him in the Centroplex 1990 or so.
He loved to play golf. So, the morning he flew into Baton Rouge from Atlanta a group took him to the Country Club of Louisiana to play a round.
He brought his girl friend du jour with him and she went with the group to CCL although she didn't play golf herself. She just rode along in one of the carts.
On the fifth or sixth hole the girl friend started whining about how hot it was, she was bored, how long before they could go back to the hotel, etc.
Grizzard looked at the group and said loud enough for her to hear, "She don't travel too good."

Used to read Lewis's columns and always enjoyed them. Didn't realize he died so young.

One of my favorites: You know why Junior League-ers don’t have group sex? All those “thank you” notes.

I worked at a bookstore in early 90s and met him at a signing. Awesome guy. Never wore socks

I first saw him on Larry King. I believe he was on several times and utterly enjoyed listening to him. He spoke of his upcoming surgery with Larry. I remember Larry announcing when Lewis died.

quote:Some posters may not know that Grizzard had a history of heart disease. In his case he had multiple heart surgeries including one where a pig's heart valve replaced his own defective heart valve. (He wrote about that, too. Very funny.)
I remember Larry announcing when Lewis died.
He died during another heart surgery to repair his latest heart problem.
The doctors had told him his chances of making it through the surgery were not too good but it was his only chance at living longer.
The morning of his heart surgery he married his girl friend so that she could inherit his estate, including his continuing book royalties, since he had no children from any of his previous marriages.
The wedding took place in his hospital room while he laid in his bed.

GA lost that game, 35-18. I think that, while he would never admit it, he was an LSU fan, deep down inside.
