By 21 I lived on my own, spent a couple of weeks over a couple of months (a few days at a time) at age 23 in a spare bedroom right before my wedding.
Last one of them died when I was 35, I got a bit of money from that, but it didn't change my standard of living.

I'm still on my dad's cell phone plan. In my defense: he gets that old man discount.

I was 21.
My kids were 20 and 21.
I know a guy that refused to accept a decent early retirement offer because his kids just got off the payroll in their mid 20s That and raising them as a single/widower put him behind on investing for retirement.
Raising independent kids will help you both financially.

By 17 I was about 60% independent. By 20 I was about 80% independent. By 22 I was about 95% independent. But it was not until 23 that I fully cut the cord.

22.
Moved out of the house for good; started grad school with a scholarship and paying research assistantship, bought a few extra cheap furnishings (dining set and queen size bed) and my girlfriend and I moved into a cozy basement apartment 500 miles away in Atlanta.
This was 1987. Had no insurance (medical or car) but sure as hell got cable with ESPN. Money was a little tight, but there was secks about every night, so it was all good...
