The Federal Communications Commission announced Friday it has approved funds to provide internet subsidies for low-income families through the establishment of the Emergency Broadband Benefit Program.
The FCC says the program will provide eligible households with discounts of up to $50 a month for broadband service, and up to $75 a month if the household is on Tribal lands. It also will provide a one-time discount of up to $100 on a computer or tablet for eligible households, the FCC added.
The FCC says that the program is open to Lifeline subscribers, including those that are on Medicaid or accept SNAP benefits; households with children receiving free or reduced-price lunch or school breakfast; Pell grant recipients; and those who have lost jobs and seen their income reduced in the last year.
The program is expected to cost $3.2 billion.
The program is expected to begin within 60 days. The FCC has not launched a signup program yet, but when updated information will be available by clicking here.

Joe Biden already said these folks can't get on computers anyways. Why we giving out subsidies then ?
Posted on 2/27/21 at 12:20 pm to Ailsa
So they have to have the internet to sign up?

The fricking real kicker in this is just like college costs, the rest of our internet prices are going to skyrocket.

Remember folks, this is a program to provide internet to poor people without internet, by requiring them to signup online.

Man you know what would be REAL cool? If people like me who spend their lives putting into the piggy bank got to get some back, instead of it going to the people who never put shite in.

frick the Internet companies
We as Americans get bent over by internet, cell, and cable/dish companies. It's a joke what we are stuck paying, and the service is getting worse and worse.
Streaming channels isn't the answer, it's playing right into their game.
And EVERYONE should be getting high speed at reasonable rates. So i don't have a lot of issues with this.
Take St.Louis for example, they and st.louis county wanted to go into internet/cell/tv services, and offer it all at a really good rate, packages all could afford.
But NOPE, Charter, ATT, etc pushed a bill many years ago, that cities in Missouri cannot go into Cable/internet business. Missouri Conservatives have never said no to a bag of cash from corporations, and they will never turn down a chance to suck a corporate dick for it either.
So frick Internet and cable providers, as well as cell service.

In our world today internet access is vital. If your kids are in school, you need internet in the household for them to be successful, pandemic or not. Making it more affordable for struggling folks doesn't seem that bad to me.

Free internet? I'm paying $50/month right now for 200mb/s internet.

I’m on tribal land and don’t need or want this. Less than 20% of the EBCI can even get highspeed broadband.
How about we use this money to expand and improve existing infrastructure? Is that too much to ask?

Anyone who would trust the FCC with this is a fricking retard.

The cost is WAY overstated. If you bundle the internet with your Obamaphone service, you’ll get a great discount. And they can create a new government agency to periodically call customer service reps for the internet providers and threaten to discontinue service unless they get the same offers as new struggling customers get.
On a more serious note, people say that internet access is critical to student success. Does that mean that the discount won’t be offered to households without children? Will the discount be revoked if students graduate and leave home to attend college?
I would argue that having a set of encyclopedias gave me a huge advantage as a student in the 1970’s but there was no taxpayer funded program to make sure everyone had access to encyclopedias unless you count public libraries where - wait for it - THEY OFFER FREE INTERNET ACCESS NOW! Follow the money; these companies aren’t interested in providing discount internet out of the goodness of their hearts.
