Not sure those can go together.
This is a weird choice, both for DC and for Coates. I don't know why anyone would want to write a superman movie, especially when you know people like the ones in this thread will cry so much about it.
I'm not going to defend his comics work because I haven't read any of it, but anyone who's calling him a bad writer obviously hasn't read The Water Dancer, or is lying because their butt hurts too much.

His BP is considered good. The kinetic energy reverberation came from him.

Technically speaking, Coates is a great writer. Excellent command of prose. Vibrant language. Good sense of character.
But he's as subtle as a nuclear warhead. And his politics are problematic for any superhero not named Black Panther.
We're getting either Black Superman or a Superman who will rise through identity politics struggles and will most likely put other white people in their place. There is no other political alternative for Coates.
Man of Steel, you have met your shitty Superman match.

There are men like Snyder and then there are other filmmakers who turn whatever they touch into shite
You just described Snyder in a nutshell. He is a great cinematographer.....that's it. He's a one trick pony. Majority of his movies are garbage and the successful ones were already put to page and he just needed to copy it.

Agreed, this is like getting Stephen King to pen a Pixar script.

I love people trying to claim he is a great writer. Being a novelist is quite different than 1) a comic book writer and 2) a movie script writer.
General opinion of his BP comics are that they are atrocious and it was a huge mistake to bring him on. Now you are giving him a piece of IP to work on that he cannot relate to at all and will likely just ignore the history and backstories and make up entirely random shite.
Snyder stuck to much of the cannon, and tried to show a different perspective on Superman. A dark theme on the carnage that ensues. Think of it like Khan in Star Trek lore. He’s insane and violent to know end, but you can understand his thinking and motivation.
Snyder just went too dark for his own good with Man of Steel and also just some horrible casting on several characters (*cough* Lois *cough*). In that, Snyder turned off most fans, and was never getting them back.
This will just be awful, but because of identify politics and the unethical use of schools to bring kids to see violent action films because a hero is black will prop it up for them.
Maybe DC and WB just think a real Superman movie is DOA and figure they can just cash in on identity politics bullshite.

Oh for frick’s sake. Virtue signaled, I suppose.

The bigger problem is the number of people who disagree politically and socially with this decision but still pay to see the movie anyway.
If WB lost money, they’d stop trying to adapt every American fiction hero into a person of color.

I hope that’s the case. I won’t support this movie at all and I’m a DC fanboy, don’t care for the Marvel movies mostly and have been in the theater for every DC release except Birds of Prey.
I just want them to continue the Henry Cavill storyline.

I mean, technically he is.
I can't stand him or his narratives, but strip away that and he is a solid writer.

I really don't think this movie is going to be blowing up the box office.
ETA: Part of me is glad this is a Superman movie everyone will ignore instead of them doing a new "Steel" movie with Coates as writer (which would have made more sense), because Steel deserves a good writer if they ever give that character another movie.

At the very beginning, what "Mild mannered" middle class job is envisioned?

There's one more option. Skywalker him. Debase the character while claiming that's not the objective.

A writer who is incapable of subtlety cannot be great, “technically speaking” or otherwise.
