The guy that got killed in a King Air at BTR a few years ago was a corporate pilot, 6500 hours, type rated in King Air, and several biz jets, He was solo in a King Air with a glass panel for the first time, got fixated on a screen during takeoff, and failed to notice his airspeed was decaying until too late.

Chasing tape.

When I first started flying I was so excited for G500s but then I flew steam gauges and loved them more and wanted them for check rides.

Keep it simple stupid. KISS

Question for people who use acronyms excessively- what do you do with all that extra time you save?

From an old aviator, I can tell you that complacency is an issue all need to be aware of. Getting in the left seat of a King Air or Lear becomes no different than the VW you drove to the airport. Have to admit, it took a few incidents to get myself on a disciplined regimen with an aircraft. Hopefully, this will be a wake up for this guy or it is a matter of time before he is a statistic.

It happens to all levels. Many stories in the notes, but I offer this one from the Viet Nam era. The CO of the USS Hornet was in Chu Lai & decided he wanted the left seat in a C-1 headed back to the carrier. As a carrier CO, how much does he really fly? He lost an engine on take off & could not handle it. The aircraft went through the GCA site killing three marines & a tech rep. I was asleep in a tent on the site. A strange engine noise woke me up & I rolled to the ground off the cot. Prop took out the cot.

Complacency. Know your limits & stay there !

I’m not sure what the MDA is for that approach, but instead of an ILS approach, perhaps he could have used an RNAV instead. He certainly wasn’t using good CRM. That was almost a CFIT, that could have been bad for sure. I also agree that VFR>IMC is one of the most dangerous things in flying. Ol’ boy may be getting a 709 ride out of that one. The 400 is a very capable bird, at least he was too fast and not below MCA. At the end of the day, at least he isn’t on Kathryn’s Report.

eta...yes, I am bloviating aviation acronyms

his aoa was too step and he was way too fast. He was in a new to him plane, unable to set ILS approaches in IMC and damn near killed himself.

Once witnessed a near crash at Tyndall AFB.

Visiting F-4's out of Michigan ANG were doing touch and goes. Was leaving the shop for a job on the flightline just in time to look up and see one of them nearly attempt his touch and go a few hundred feet from me. Only problem was he didn't have his gear down for this one and went full AB at the last second while rotating the nose so hard his AB flame was literally bouncing off the runway and back up into the air.
He saved the plane by somehow not stalling it during his near miss and got back into the pattern, I'm sure with a flightsuit that suddenly wreaked of poo.

Other birds had to use the other runway to land while runway maintenance checked out the tarmac for damage from his afterburners (melting I assumed)
