Pretty sure the US Congress would also have to approve.

Alabama attempted to annex the panhandle more than once in the 1800’s. It was always a mess and nothing came of it.

not enough people for even one congressional district.
congress would not allow it.

the oft proposed California split has several million in the least populous chunk. its 35 or 40 million.

If this is somehow successful, I truly believe this will be the rebranding of America as we know it. You are going to see many areas in the country split.

Eastern Oregon becomes Idaho
Eastern Washington joins Idaho as well
Upper Peninsula becomes a state
Upstate New York becomes a state
Colorado splits
California splits into 3 separate states
DC becomes a state
PR becomes a state

States with one major urban area controlling the other 90% of the state is going to cause major issues that simply cannot be resolved. USA will end up with 60-70+ states.

They will be the Divided States of America

Idaho has to be the most underrated state in the Union.

"yes."

My first thought as well. Idaho going "frick YES" right now

Also, I love to see this. Not sure if it's even possible within the constitution or whatever, but this would be great.

ETA: I can't imagine this would EVER work, because slippery slope. Best way for those disgruntled with the current state of Oregon is going to be to get the hell out of the state and let it burn.

You're living in your own Private Idaho
Living in your own Private Idaho
Underground like a wild potato.
Don't go on the patio.
Beware of the pool,
Blue bottomless pool.
It leads you straight
Right throught the gate
That opens on the pool.

Yep, the last of the mountain states to be invaded.

I'm sure Idaha, as a red state, would love this.

Idaha is getting bluer and bluer due to areas like Boise getting a bunch of transplants from Cali, Oregon, and Washington. It's no where near turning blue, though, obviously.

Yeh, wine country and orange county are just trashballs

None of those are red parts,

Wine country is Napa, Lake, Mendocino, and Sonoma counties they voted between 64 and 76% D in the 2020 presidential election Lake was the only one that was "close" in 2016 with 52% but it is by far the lowest population of the 4. Orange County voted over 54% D in both 2016 and 2020.

There are very similar noises coming out of many rural Virginia counties located alongside the West Virginia border. Damn shame too being that Virginia was at the heart of the founding of our once-great nation, THESE United States of America.

This would be a case of original jurisdiction SCOTUS would indeed hear.

Off the top of my head forming a new state would be far easier from a constitutional standpoint.

n both Oregon and California, the red parts of the state are the poorest and trashiest parts, and pretty much utterly dependent on the blue parts for what little they do have.

I'm sure another state would be just *clamoring* to take them in

It would be better than joining Idaho. How many republican senators does Washington and Oregon get? If none then I guess it doesn't matter, but otherwise it matters a lot.

Then there should be little to no push back from Oregon legislature to approve the split and reallocation. I am sure Baton Rouge was equally excited to see St. George split.

Do you feel bad if it's the other way around? Say in TN, Shelby and Davidson counties are blue in a sea of red and have basically no influence in the state government as far as numbers go.

Most of your blue areas are shite holes, so no, I don't feel bad if they don't have control.

St. George didn't "split" from shite. It is still part of EBR and it was never part of the City of Baton Rouge.

At least you're honest, though I take exception to Nashville being a shithole.
