Im sure this has been discussed a shite ton but I'm watching the 96 Fiesta Bowl and wondering how the hell they were so good? What did Osbourne do that can't be replicated anymore?

Osborne came one play from a 3 peat and one game from a chance of 5 straight titles. They were unreal during that 5 year stretch.

Nebraska doesn’t have a natural recruiting base. When Osbourne was there it was a National brand, they could recruit anywhere. 18 year kids today have no memory of Nebraska being a premier program.

It’s tough to sell Lincoln, Nebraska compared to a dozen other college campuses.

Why do we have to go thru this 20 times a year?

Prop 48's, county scholarships for the dumb athletes, so they could redshirt, etc.

Tejas cut their balls off, when they cut the prop 48 numbers and their nonsense.

Today, unless you're sxhool is within about 3 hours of an elite talent hotbed, you're not going to be able to bring your program to any sort of relevancy.

Realistically in 2021, UCF, a G5 team, is a much better job than Nebraska. That's unfathomable even 15 years ago.

Nebraska simply has no instate talent at all and when they left the Big 12, the Texas pipeline shut down, too. Even in a dogshit Big 10 West, they're just not winning. At best, they can be Iowa, and rise up to compete in the west every 5-7 yrs, but get blwon out by the likes of OH state in the Big 10 title game.

The dynamics College football have shifted away from what allowed Nebraska to be so good. It’s over for them. There was a time when the Ivy League had the premier teams in college football, then for a while it was the service academies. Things change and hopefully your model doesn’t get left in the dust

You were going to have to serve anyway. Better to go in as an officer and have your education paid for.

More scrutiny on recruiting. Tennessee and Nebraska had big “slime budgets” in the 90’s and earlier. Not saying recruiting violations don’t exist, but back then you could really get away with a lot of wheeling and dealing.

Dr. Tom had this facade of being the moral, forthright coach in the Big 8 compared to Switzer's outlaw reputation. Nebraska was also known for choking in the big games. So what does the saintly Dr. Tom do? He started loading up on criminals and degenerates like Phillips and the Peters. Dr. Tom was no more saintly than that other massive hypocrite, JoePa.

If you watch any news, TV, or commercials this is a great shock, but only 3 states have a black population over 30%. Mississippi(of course)37%, Louisiana 32%, and Georgia 30%.
