Absolutely not
SK shows focus on story and character development
They specialize in character development and anyone who is serious about writing or just trying to understand why modern Hollywood pisses people of…should start watching and studying SK shows.

Does anyone have any good Rom Com recommendations? My wife is going through a phase where this is the only thing she wants to watch and she's found a few of the Korean shows that she liked, "What's wrong with Secretary Kim" on Prime and The Business Proposal on Netflix. They don't even have to be good (by this board's standards), the cheesier and more over the top the more she seemed to like it.

Emergency Couple and Flower Boy Next Door are two that I can think of that my wife liked. While not really a comedy Where the Stars Land was pretty good.

Pretty much every SK show is driven by a romance with MAYBE the exception of Arthdal (though the relationship is still central), Rugal (though it is about losing his wife), and Uncanny Counters
That’s one reason you can’t lose with SK shows. Many are great sci-fi/action/fantasy so dudes love them but, at their heart, they are really character driven proudly heterosexual romances that embrace men being men and women being feminine yet strong
Granted there is SOME comedy, so not necessarily a rom com, but a chick can’t lose with any of these:
Alchemy of Souls
Bulgasal
Memories of Alhambra (Romance very similar to Pride and Prejudice)
Sisyphus
My Country

I started Narco-Saints a couple days ago, and I am enjoying it so far. I definitely recommend checking it out if you enjoy SK shows.

I'm working with Director Park Chan-Wook at the moment ... with a camera operator from Parasite. Interested to see their approach to the material.

My only experience with Korean shows was Squid Game and Sisyphus.
But recently I watched Extraordinary Attorney Woo, and I thought it was clever and very well written.

South Korean film industry is leaving Hollywood in the dust,
better writing, far better acting, better movies and mainly far better tv series, since 2017-8 range.
I watch very few shows on TV and with limited time, it is time well spent on the South Korean show.

The thing is Koreans, well South Koreans now a days was inspired by the U.S Cinmea of the 80 and 90's when creativity was free flowing and charaterization was important.
That is why when you watch a SOuth Korean show they tend to act pretty human instead of caricatures of humans who are only plathforms for diversity check mark. You can understand where a hard working man in korea is coming from when life get him down and he's barely making ends meet.
You can't emphasized with the same type of hard working man who feel that he has privileged over some rich PoC due to the color of his skin and is apologetic over it. Thats not relatable.
Anothe reason why the majority of Koreans have the same standard vaule is each and every single male have to serve 2 years in their military's. It doesn't matter when you serve it only that you do so between 18-30 years old. If you don't serve than you will be arrested. Yes even celebrities have to serve, make your money but you will serve. That is why you don't see their stars disparaging their country etc etc.
A shared experience like that unites a populace.
Anyway, the trick to watching a korean show is to fast forward 3 minute of the intro as it would be mostly recap from the pervious episode.
Episode 1 is always without fail, the introduction of the characters in the show. It will always be a set up and for you to get to know the people you will go on a journey with.

Turned on first ep of Arthdal tonight when wife was sitting next to me on the couch. First scene is the sleeping mom and baby and the snake Smithers down towards baby, rears back to strike then scene cuts.
Wife stands up and says "Annnd going to bed. Not doing a snake trying to eat a baby right now".

I watched "Business Proposal", and I would highly recommend that. Cinderalla-esque type of story.

That’s ironically the strongest suit of SK shows and the biggest turn off to Americans now.
Some of the best SK shows start off somewhat slowly because they are taking time to delve into character and world building. Arthdal is like that. The first 3 or 4 episodes is really just a deep dive in set up that is EXTREMELY important later on…to the point it creates some of the best television I have even see on episode 12.
Bulgasal is like that as well…showing you the story of how the last surviving monster in the world became an immortal monster, and his motivation for hunting and killing.
The problem with most of us, as evidenced on this board…is we don’t have the patience for payoffs and we don’t want to read subtitles.

I've been watching K-Dramas off and on since the mid-2000's, so I figured I'd offer some recommendations. These are in addition to all the other great suggestions that have been made in this thread. As this list is based on my own taste in shows and perhaps a rose-tinted memory, since I watched most of these around the time they aired, the quality may vary.
List in no particular order:
Angry Mom (Single mother that was a delinquent goes back to school undercover to protect her bullied daughter)
Heartless City (Rookie cop goes undercover into a criminal organization looking into murder of her friend)
Hwang Jin-Yi (Historical show about the life of a famous gisaeng, which were similar to geisha)
Master's Sun (CEO that hires assistant/secretary that can see ghosts)
My Girlfriend is a Gumiho (Action star wannabe unleashes a gumiho, the korean version of a nine tail fox like the japanese kitsune)
Painter of the Wind (Historical show about girl painter that pretends to be a boy to find dad's murderer)
Queen In-Hyuns Man (Struggling actress meets a scholar who traveled a few hundred years into the future)
Swallow the Sun (Orphaned hoodlum gets hired to work for a rich, powerful man)
The Greatest Love (Former girl group singer and now struggling celebrity meets the top actor)
The King 2 Hearts (Alternate reality about relationship of a modern South Korean prince and a North Korean officer)
Tree With Deep Roots (Historical show about killings that happen while King Sejong the Great attempts to create the modern Korean script/alphabet)
Secret Garden (About the relationship between a rich CEO and a stuntwoman)
My Mister (Impoverished struggling temp worker forms an unlikely bond with her supervisor)
The Producers (About tv show producers)
My Love From the Star (Relationship between an alien who has been on Earth for a few hundred years and a top actress)
My Name (Young woman goes undercover in police to find her father's killer)

You have been spot on with recommendations so I’ve added all 3 plus some others recommended. I’m glad there’s still interest in this thread because I haven’t stopped watching Korean shows. I hardly watch anything from Hollywood anymore.
I watch Viki significantly more than Netflix so I don’t have a lot of Netflix shows to recommend. I recently watched The Crowned Clown and while it wasn’t up there with My Country the New Age (which I recently watched a second time) it was good.
I’m watching Lawless Lawyer now and I like it. Rumor is the lead in it is going to be Eun Som in the next season of Arthdal Chronicles. I think he’ll do well.
I’m also watching Empress Ki and really like it but it is Viki Plus.

I see Alchemy of Souls has a season 2 coming out soon but I’m on episode 13 so I don’t want to read too much and be spoiled. Does season 1 wrap things up or end on a cliffhanger?
BTW, VERY solid suggestion. It’s the most enjoyable kdrama I’ve watched in awhile.
