Oh, yeah. I love it in the summer in Louisiana, when we just pitch a tent in the remote woods and enjoy nature. So relaxing.

The main reason why I like it is because it reminds me of all of the wonderful times going the the field when I was active duty Army.

Lovely. Just lovely. Especially with your girlfriend. Just lovely nature.

Try two weeks in the field, no showers, at Fort Benning, in July. With a 60lb ruck.

No kidding. But to be fair, those things are built like tanks specifically to take off roading, and they have a ton of features.

I looked at them. They're nice but I could never part with that kind of cash.

I've been camping all my life. I do it costly as it is. That's just crazy to me.

That's what the OP and I are talking about - camping.

Teardrop type trailers can get obnoxiously expensive. Throw on some “off-road” worthy features and it’s insane.

One reason I continue to drag my little guy around instead of upgrading even thought it is a bit overwhelmed.

I refuse to finance something I can’t even take a shite in.

My only thought is animals.

I don't worry about animals but that's my guess.

Who wants to have a piss jug in your tent when it isn't in the winter time? Those stairs for baws old lady will suck at 4 am.

guaranteed flat surface (no annoying rock or stick in your back)

don't have to worry about flowing water if it rains

tent lasts longer as you don't have to worry about rips or tears on the bottom on the tent

Pffft. The LTi is for your Butler. You want the HD. At a starting price of $1.7 million, an OT baller should easily be able to afford that.

Guy down the street has one. Not as cool as this gray one. I’m not even really sure what he does with it. He’s a quiet serial killer looking type of guy.

What Salmon said..but I believe you do still need to find a level area to park it.

I think another advantage, especially in the over landing aspect, is that the rooftop tents pack up fairly quickly.

Being from the Birmingham area you are not too far from Windrock Offroad Park near Knoxville TN. There are two Toyota Offroad events in 2021 at Windrock. Great Smokey Mountain Trail Ride June 14-19 2021. Also Appalachian Toyota RoundUp Labor Day Weekend. A Toyota Offroad group here in New Orleans hosts an event at Hawk Pride Mountain Offroad Park near Muscle Shoals AL at the end of August. These are 3-4 Day events that have from 50 to 400 Toyota’s.

So it's basically an elevated tent?

You know you can just go camping without having to haul around some weird trailer, right?

Can someone please explain why it needs to be on top of something? That makes no sense. Harder to set up, harder to get into, harder to get out of...

Basically, it's easier to set up, doesn't take up room inside of your vehicle, will stay dry because you aren't on the ground, you're away from wildlife that could be on the ground, it's easier to make "level", and the bedding that comes with them can stay inside of it and is generally better than bedding that you would put in a ground tent.

ETA: also, how are people supposed to know that you are into overlanding if you don't have a tent on the roof of your vehicle?

Not really. GoTreads or a 2x4 or even a rock will work just fine.
