Think Stingley opts out after this season? Wtf
Posted on 12/1/20 at 9:01 am to JiminyCricket
With this year being so non-typical, it is hard to gauge how this will affect one's draft stock.
Take Jamar, I assume his stock will not be affected. Maybe I am wrong on that, we shall see.
But, in a regular year, it seems not being on the field is a roll of the dice for all but the most elite of the elite. Stingley probably fits the elite category, but few will.

I thought he was looking forward to playing some on offense next year and winning the Heisman Trophy.

It almost feels like college football is crumbling before our eyes with all of this opt out stuff. I think you'll start seeing players leave very early in their careers and start training professionally for the NFL.
has CBB completely crumbled because a small % of players leave after 1 year?
even if this happens, you are still only talking about a very small % of players that would even consider this
and using this completely abnormal/fricked up season as evidence of anything in the future seems just silly

I thought opt out was just for this year due to covid

I really hope he plays next season. More tape is always good. But this approach precedes Covid. Didn't Bosa sit out his Junior season?

I listened to that interview and I didn’t get that impression at all.
Yeah, he was supportive of Marshall’s decision. But he was quick to point out that this season should have been over by now, and that the NFL draft isn’t waiting on CFB’s extended schedule.
He’s also always very quick to point out his son’s need to get more experience and polish his game. I think Stingley Sr. probably knows the value of game experience, and the danger of sitting out for a full year. But maybe that’s just my purple & gold colored glasses.
Another thing I found interesting - Stingley Sr. said Marshall’s biggest concern about the combine is the 40-yard dash. When they asked him about Jr’s 40 time, he said “he ran a laser-timed 4.3 flat at the Open.”

You mean he's gone after next season
There are some rumors that he is done after the last game this year. No bowl game and sits out next year.
I think it would be a huge mistake and probably affect his draft stock. You would have to believe that the staff would be really pissed and would give up any info that could hurt him to NFL staff.

Start fricking paying them like they deserve and you wouldn’t have to do all this bitching and moaning

Which is funny because of how long average NFL players Career last. You would think hey let’s get this free education while I’m here, football don’t last forever.
It’s like working for a big company and not investing in the 401k when they match whatever you put into it.

It will not affect a damn thing. Stop fooling yourself.

It doesn’t really establish a “team before self” mentality when one of the player’s dad has a weekly spot on a local sports radio show

No one panic. I listened to the entire interview too and Stingley is gonna play. OP is just soft
Posted on 12/1/20 at 9:21 am to lsufan1971
My thoughts are this, if he's got one foot out of the door then we don't need him on the team anyway. We are trying to change the culture here not continue it. If he's all in and willing to sacrifice like the rest of the team then you welcome him with open arms. If he's even considering "opting out" tell him good luck and prepare other kids to take his spot. As great a talent as he is, this year has shown that at his position he can be neutralized and isn't a gamechanger. Teams just adjust the way they line up and attack others really making him inconsequential. This week against Smith is big for him if he has any thoughts of opting out.
Though it's not likely to affect him, his film from this season isn't exactly gonna be great. Lot of "hustle" plays that aren't gonna gain him praise from NFL scouts.

College football is over.
I said the same thing a few months ago. The college game as we knew it is over. The media and the me first attitude now prevalent among the young players right or wrong has changed everything. I never thought I would say this but I have now become more a Pro football fan.

I'm skeptical that you see widespread 2 year and opt out decisions moving forward as things normalize.
It's not possible because there are probably single-digit players each year that can even pull this off.
I have said for years that basketball players guaranteed to be in the lottery should just sit out and spend the one year training. But there are few that can do that. There are even fewer in football that have that ability, and even fewer still who WOULD do it.

I have listened to him every week. I don't think there is any way he Jr. plays next year. Will be completely stunned if he does. Not bashing, just saying he won't play.

What the universities will pay wont stop the kids with first round aspirations from going pro.

They are paid. They are well taken care of legally by NCAA standards, and also under the table.
The players aren’t getting paid narrative is such BS.
