A new study has attempted to rank the scariest horror films of all time by monitoring viewers’ average heart rates.

The broadbandchoices ‘Science of Scare’ project followed the heart rates of over 50 people across more than 100 hours of horror films to try and determine the 35 scariest films of all time.

According to the findings, 2012’s Sinister comes out at the top of the table.

The Ethan Hawke film follows a true-crime writer who investigates a string of gruesome murders on film footage, and according to the study audience members experienced a 32% uplift in heart rates – from 65 beats per minute (bpm) to 86 bpm.

However, the latter film sits just behind Sinister in overall rankings due to its average heart rate increase to 85 bpm, followed by The Conjuring at three (84 bpm), Hereditary at four (83 bpm) and Paranormal Activity at five (82 bpm).

Only four films more than 20 years old are in the rankings – The Exorcist, Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre – while James Wan in the most popular individual director, with three films in the top 10.

I call bullshite on Paranormal Activity...nothing happens 70% of the movie, it's just boyfriend/girlfriend talking...and arguing...

Wait, yeah - that will get your heart rate up.

One of the scariest movies I’ve seen in a theater. This was the first installment though—heard things in the middle of the night for a week after

Sinister is legit scary.

The conjuring is good but not that scary.

Yeah of that list Sinister, The Ring and The Descent are legit scary (hell The Descent is scary just by the claustrophobia alone.)

Sinister is great until the ending.

Spoilers..

The fact that they made the children the killers was just so stupid to me. Even if they were possessed by Baguul (or whatever) there's no way they could physically do some of the things shown in the videos.

Outside of that though, I really liked it.

The Exorcist at 17 is a travesty.

But, i'm guessing they tested this on viewers watching the movies recently?

The Ring/Grudge for me.

Saw those both in theaters at 12 and 14 years old.

Scared the hell out of me.

I've said this since I've seen the movie. The scariest thing about it is that you go that whole film and the lead actress never pops out those huge mams of hers.

Otherwise, it's a "horror movie" completely reliant on loud-noise, jump scares.

Not surprised to see Nightmare on Elm St. listed. It hasn't aged as well but the idea of and the look of Freddy Kreuger is pretty damn horrifying.

They definitely have that but it was legit creepy as shite to me.

And my only problem with the ending of Sinister is I just just didn't think the child actors were good enough to pull off what with it.

too many circumstantial factors to consider. If im drinking then none of this making me flinch.

I watched "The conjuring" while home alone, hungover and battling post drinking anxiety. I had to grab my pistol for comfort then had to put it away from using it on myself.

I would imagine some of the other classics would have been on there if people hadn't seen them before. Im not saying someone had seen Halloween 20 times and had never seen Sinister, but the classics have a bigger impact on your first viewing and a movie that doesnt age super great isnt going to scare many people.

Very underrated.

I think if people actually thought more about the concept of the movie, it would be even more creepy. The idea of someone or something slowly coming after you and never stopping is actually creepy as hell.

frick the trailers for this film.

The Ring

Scary at times, but more creepy than scary, outside of the jump cuts. I'm told that Paranormal Activity is like that, but I've actually seen The Ring out of those on the list, almost certainly on a plane between Europe and the United States.

And if you can get past it, living your whole life hoping the other people down the line can keep it going so it doesn't come back to you.

Pretty solid list. The home video scenes in Sinister are some of the scariest stuff in horror. The first 2/3 of Insidious is incredible and while not as scary as the other two The Conjuring has some great jump scares throughout.

I don't know that heartrate = scared. Someone being startled will have a heartrate spike and a lot of these movies rely on surprise and cranking the volume real loud for a split second (a/k/a jumpscares).

I think fear is almost too ambiguous of a concept to measure. Movies like The Ring and The Descent are fear inducing (to me), but may not do shite for someone else. Cool idea though.
