Seems extremely biased for recent films given the research is only done now and not in the time period of most classics

The technology advancement of movie making really makes it hard to put into context how scary the older films were during their time, because some of the effects from then would be eye rolling worthy if done in a movie these day

Not to mention inherit biased that come from the older classics getting ingrained into pop culture and how much more likely it is for that group of people to have already seen the classics over the recent ones

frick this movie. I hate scary movies because I am a baby back bitch when it comes to watching them. I sat through this while chasing some tail back in high school and even the lower head of my testosterone-powered 17-yr-old self didn't think it was worth it. Never again.

it's not just technology, it's the concepts themselves

Texas Chainsaw Massacre makes people feel icky and scared and it's 35 years old with 35 years of movies mimicking the icky, scary doom of TCM. imagine seeing that fricker in 1974 when people weren't used to those sorts of atmospheres in movies

Yeah it’s like if you tried to rank the best NFL players of all time by ranking them on combine performance

Paranormal Activity was the scariest movie I've ever seen in theaters. The anticipation of something happening is much scarier to me than showing me the monster. Nothing you can show me, can scare me as much as what I'm imagining while I'm waiting for it to happen. The sequels were all terrible since it's a formula you can only get away with once. After the first time, I know nothing happens until the end when you show me a cgi close up face.

Oh yeah, I completely forgot about that little caveat. I thought it was pretty cheesy that sex passed the follower to the new person. But hey! Movies!

Man idk - maybe it just didn’t resonate with me. Saw it in theaters and didn’t find it scary at all. And I’m someone who is a big baby when it comes to scary movies - I won’t watch Hereditary, Conjuring, Sinister, Us etc. because the trailers alone scared me too much

Yeah, with PA in the theater, you could feel the dread from the crowd of always trying to anticipate what is coming next. It didn’t really work after the first one

I don't know that heartrate = scared. Someone being startled will have a heartrate spike and a lot of these movies rely on surprise and cranking the volume real loud for a split second (a/k/a jumpscares

I guess it’s fun to do, but yeah, “jump scares” doesn’t necessarily = scariest, IMO

Movies that frick with your head are scarier than those that frick with your heart rate.

For my money, Drag Me to Hell is the “jump scariest” movie I’ve seen in the theaters, even if it beats over the head with them to the point that it is comical.

I still need to see Sinister

No movies actually scare me, I like watching everyone's reactions though. IDK, I think my parents messed me up as a kid and let me watch any horror movie in the 80s on cable and the only one that bothered me a little was the Exorcist (obviously from the 70s but was on cable).

I saw that when I was 18 and it scared me - I totally didn’t like it (I don’t like scary movies but went to see it with my friend)

Then later that week the cable went out - scared the shite out of me - I didn’t sleep for like a month

Not surprised to see Nightmare on Elm St. listed. It hasn't aged as well but the idea of and the look of Freddy Kreuger is pretty damn horrifying.

Yea that is such a good plot for a horror movie. It promotes drugs etc though which would be killed in 2020

The Omen probably scored low on heart rate, but plenty of people say it's scary.

Sinister and It Follows were both on SyFy last night. Both of those movies are creepy as hell. The sound mixing in It Follows is incredible, and the 8mm film movies in Sinister are some of the most deranged pieces of horror I've ever seen.

Paranormal Activity should be renamed “The Startling”. It’s just cheap. It’s not one of the scariest movies ever made.
