It's a combination of things.

1. Games without fans feel weird. They are less exciting, less interesting for casual viewers.

2. Every sport competing with every other sport means people are going to focus more on their favorite. They are spread out normally for a reason.

3. The political grandstanding has certainly not helped. Most people want an escape from the madness that's going on in the world, not to be beat over the head with it.

4. Finally, interest in organized professional sports is shrinking heavily in the younger demo in the US, for many reasons.

A lot of the teams in the bubble were so boring to watch. Denver should have been out in the first round, the Rockets didn't even have a damn center on the team, and then we had a Portland team with Melo on it lol. All trash teams that had no chance of making it to the finals.

How much do sports bars not being packed affect the ratings?

Wouldn’t that help the ratings since people are forced to watch on there own tv versus in large crowds.

well yeah, one game featured two large market teams playing each other, the other featured BFE Louisiana against BFE Mississippi

I think NBA and NHL playing outside of their normal time frame is a big part of it. People just aren't conditioned to caring about these sports once football starts.

I also wonder how much the election has had on viewership. News ratings have been soaring to record levels this past quarter

Not much since they haven't been counted in the ratings, if anything it makes it look worse against last year's numbers when people were watching in bars.

ESPN has been complaining about away from home viewing (bars, prisons, hospitals, terminals) for 20 years.
In 2017 Nielsen started giving clients the away from home #s so they can sell the number to advertisers.

quote:

He said millions of people watch live television out of their home each day. “And for ESPN, that’s been big,” Bulgrin said. “If you’ve been in a commercial establishment, chances are ESPN has been on.”

But up till now, just how big that out-of-home audience is has been tough to say.

“With this new service, we’re now adding this audience into our traditional ratings to give our clients a combined number,” said Nielsen’s Sara Erichson. The new count uses what’s called a “portable people meter.” It’s a cell phone-sized device that records what the people who carry it are exposed to. It uses audio codes, embedded into all television programming, that viewers can’t hear but the people meter can pick up.

Erichson said the new out-of-home numbers are showing significant bumps in total audience for some channels. Sports programming is recording about a 9 percent increase in viewership. That’s a boost ESPN needs in the world of cord-cutters and cord-nevers.

The entire playoffs have been aired in non-traditional months at non-traditional times in non-traditional locations. Got back to me about numbers for any sport in 2021.
