The NBA Finals tipped off a few months late in 2020, and boy do the earliest TV ratings reflect the affects of coronavirus. Game 1 of the 2020 NBA Finals settled for a 2.1 rating among adults 18-49 and 5.3 million total viewers. Now, those averages will rise significantly when final Nielsen data becomes available, but they are currently about half of what last year’s comparable preliminary data estimated for ABC.

Lowest rates NBA Finals game. Previous record was 2007 game 1 at 7.76 million.
Last year’s game 1 averaged 15.14 M viewers.

Stanley Cup Final ratings down 61% from 2019.

The clinching game went head-to-head with the Chiefs/Ravens, which was not ideal, of course.

I think NBA and NHL playing outside of their normal time frame is a big part of it. People just aren't conditioned to caring about these sports once football starts.

I do wonder how much that's impacted the ratings. Doesn't even seen like either league is heavily marketing them either

Wonder what this does going forward on the NBA possibly making a permanent change to a later start

2 teams nobody cares about

A 50% drop with a Lebron Lakers team is crazy

This is largely related to football IMO

Football just rapes every other sport

I know LA is a basketball town but I wonder how many people in LA switched over to the Dodgers playoff game after the Lakers jumped out to that huge lead.

Wow. Turns out nobody cares about LeBron and the Lakers. Can’t compete with NFL regular season games and when they have a night against the MLB they completely squander it.

What was the number for Game 1 or 2 of Yankee Indians? I know there is no comparable data to line up for that game.

Folks do not view either as real finals so there is no interest. I will never consider the TB Lightning be real champs.

That's a big factor for them. I tried tuning into either game 2 or 3 & couldn't find it which forced me to look up what channel it was on. I know that's not a big deal but that's too much trouble for casual viewers.

Do you think the Lakers/Heat and the NBA feel better because the trend resembles what happened in a Dallas/Tampa Stanley Cup Final?

I'm telling y'all, nobody gives a shite about the half arse sports seasons. They feel like a full season of exhibitions.

It blows my mind that NHL agreed to up to 3 Stanley Cup Final games on NBCSN each year. There is no way in hell the money was worth that loss of exposure.
