I’m pretty sure it’s understood that this is combined household income.

doing middle class (and above) things don't really associate much with the mass of people who are way below them. you associate with other people at/near your station and it creates a severe priming effect

so the next issue is defining what "middle" means. are we talking about the middle third? of income/savings?

some people seem to want to expand "middle" class to mean about 80% of the population

So what’s the solution? Associate with more people in the working class?

I have a maid, SFP and I go to church.

This was all said above in jest.

But I understand what you’re saying it’s about perspective but I think rich is a term relative to your position. I know we can’t go without income for 3-4 months. To me, that means you’re not close to wealthy. To me, that’s still working/middle class.

Its all deficit spending. You aren’t “getting your money back”. You’re taking money from your children.

This is the worst kind of victimhood complex. You make 200-350k and you are complaining about some out of work waitress getting 1.2k. Be grateful for what you have. Plus, the govt you pay for keeps the “poors” from breaking in and taking your toys.

I owned a moderately successful tropical fish store for 2 years before selling it. Everything went through my individual taxes. The taxable was 120,000ish but what I was taking out of it was closer 25-30,000. 2 employees including myself and a part time kid with me working 7 days a week often 14 hours a day driving to Atlanta 2 times a week for stock. In 3 years I was expecting to personally start taking out around 50,000 and that’s when it got sold and I went back to DoD contract work.

I was better off than many in the community but by the time everyone else got their cut there wasn’t much meat on the bone for me. I made more money living in an air conditioned tent for 90 days at an ASP than I did the 2 years I own that shop.

it's not really an issue with a solution. it's all just perspective and how that changes malleable terms like "the middle class"

due to my job i meet a lot of people on the other side of things than you. they have to "live small" and save up for months to afford to pay $500

*ETA: also don't take this as a defense of the high taxes and spending addiction our government has. i'm just talking about class perception

I can't really complain about not getting a stimulus check because we got the PPP for our small business, but that went to cover salaries and we still didn't take a paycheck for 2 months so we could retain all our employees.

I'm in the same boat. PPP kept my people employed, but I didn't take a check for April or May. We generated practically no revenue April through June.

Things picked up in July, and are gangbusters right now. Some folks I know, lawyers and CPAs, were able to use PPP to pay employees, and take huge draws due to PPP since their revenue didn't have to go to their biggest expense.

Rich means you have enough capital to wake up tomorrow and never HAVE to go to work again. Otherwise you simply have a high income that you can lose at any time.
This has nothing to do with income, tho. I know people that make millions and live paycheck-to-paycheck. Eyeballs deep in debt. I also know people that make $60k/yr, have no debt, own their home outright, and work more for fun than necessity. They could walk away any time.

Feeling “rich” has more to do with living below your means than a measure of income.

You’re right though, anyone can be poor again. I’ve seen plenty of Trustafarians go broke with astonishing speed.

Debt. Most of these people have debt out the arse. Maybe not OP, but most business owners I know live off credit. They just get more credit because they make more money.

It stimulates political cover. The political reality is that unless you want a puppet President Biden being run by marxist, it is going to cost at least one trillion dollars. Republicans have no choice. If it helps Trump get another four years, it's worth every penny. The alternative is to horrible to contemplate.

The people caught between middle class and rich really get the shaft. The $200,000-350,000 earners just carrying the weight for all the poors around here. Let’s make a list of what government does for people like me? Absolutely nothing. America only panders to the absolute poor or extremely rich. We’re the Forgotten Class.

You’re well within upper class. You aren’t filthy rich, but don’t act like you have it so bad

OP has $206,000 in combined student loans. OP has made some bad decisions to this point. OP is further thankful for all he has but can’t be lumped in with sustained long term earners of this class.

Yea, but don’t you feel so good about giving your money to people who spent their youth and earnings frivolous. It warms me even more to know that only a percentage my money makes it to them after being thoughtfully allocated (with minimal waste) by our government employees.

I'm with SFP on this. Most people have NO clue that so many people make so little money. People who didn't grow up like Rockefellers or Vanderbilts always tend to see themselves as middle class for the duration of their entire lives, regardless of how much they earn or accumulate. It's just a subconscious bias (no judgment, btw, it's universal).

There's a really neat chart put out by the WSJ for seeing what income percentile you're in. LINK

If you, individually, make just $100K a year, you earn more than 92% of Americans.

If you, individually, make just $30K a year, you earn more than 53% of Americans.

If you took "middle class" to mean individual income between the 25th and 75th percentile, that would be (roughly) $12,500 and $52,500.

Full disclosure, the WSJ uses all persons 16 and over who earned income as their base, so some high school kids might be skewing this some, but probably not so significantly as to render it un-useful.

So you are bitching because you want those loans off your neck? I don't blame you. Service on that amount has to run north of 1200/month?

You elected that slavery.
