In your opinion, should rich people pay more in income taxes?

I'm putting a line of $350k or more a year in gross income. That's basically your top 2% income earners.

Personally, I think the "rich should pay more in taxes" is the most idiotic thing spoken in politics.

same percent is only fair across the board...real question should be why don't the perpetually poor pay for their drain on the system...instead of a tax, maybe it could be being stopped after 3 kids from 3 different donors

instead of pulling down the wealthy, we should help pull up the poor

How much more from the federal government am I going to get vs someone that pays less?

Answer that question first and then I will give you my answer.

I proposed something to a leftist commie girl I was in law school with:

"Would you be ok if you made a 4.0 on an exam and the professor decided to take .5 off your grade and evenly distribute it to kids who made 2.0s or 2.5s?" Obviously her answer was "hell no! that's crazy!" and I get that it's not a perfect analogy, but I always think about that when I hear that rich people should pay more or pay their fair share.

Absolutely.
The salient question is, should they pay disproportionately more ... or in the case of Bezos or hedgefund managers, disproportionately less?

Shouldn’t be based on percentage of income. Take cost to run govt, divide by number of citizens. This gives you the per citizen amount owed.

Doing this makes it painful for the lower income who will then demand less govt along with the upper income who already do.

I'm a fan of the flat tax but it's not really "flat" with the same percentage. A true flat tax is everyone pays the exact same amount of money. When you buy an apple at the store you are paying a flat sales tax. It doesn't matter how rich you are.

It should be based on what you use if anything.

If you never drive and don't have kids you arent getting a whole lot of return on paving roads and funding schools.

Somehow the people that use the most always pay the least

No, a flat 10% across the board,no deductions. A person making 350,000(rich) would pay more than a person making 35,ooo (poor) pays. No free rides,no earned income credit, every
body pay their fair share.

I’m in favor of the flat tax with everyone above a certain income pay a flat percentage, including corporations.

Tax consumption, not earnings or wealth.

Don't think it's fair? Exempt non-luxury food items (rice, ground beef, chicken, etc) and toilet paper

I used to think this when I was a fresh MBA working in corporate America and an unabashed believer in competitive capitalism.

I'm still an unabashed believer in competitive capitalism, but have realized that's now what we have in the US.

Also, and this is admittedly petty (and short term) - I'm so f'n tired of being lectured to by Hollywood, the NBA, the music industry, the NFL, big time media, the (surprisingly) wealthy political class and boardrooms across the country, that I say frick'm. Tax the shite out of them and let's see how "progressive" they really are.

Here's a helpful hint - they're progressive when it comes to your money, not theirs. They will abandon liberal causes in a heartbeat if they ever perceive the middle class to have grown tired of sheltering them from the realities of their own politics. IOW - we are their useful idiots like blacks are the useful idiots of the Left.

folks worth over a million dollars ought to have the net fed tax they paid posted on the internet.

I do not believe any of them pay a significant levy

They should, and a flat tax would accomplish that, but that’s not enough punishment for the rich if you’re a marxist.
