Anyone been to W. North Carolina mountain areas recently?

Seeing a lot of mixed reports online, so I was wondering if anyone has recent first hand info on how things look there as far as recreation activities, restaurants, breweries, etc.
Normal? "New" normal? Worse?

Those mixed reports caused us to nix Asheville from our trip 2 weeks ago.

Very west NC is still very spotty on what is open and what is not. Talking around Murphy/Franklin/Highlands area.
Fontana Village is completely shutdown and they are looking for new owners.

What do you all mean by "mixed reports" and "spotty?" Is this pertaining to the commercial attractions (restaurants, shops, and breweries,) or the natural areas (hiking trails, kayaking, fishing)?

Doesn't Fontana Village have some kind of odd 99 year long term lease from TVA or something? So you don't actually own the land the buildings are on? Would think that would make financing a little difficult. I love that area though.

I've seen information online indicating some of the commercial and natural areas are open and normally accessible and some information indicating others are closed or somewhat restricted.
I was simply seeking any recent firsthand accounts anyone might have that would indicate how widespread the restrictions on any of that stuff might be (commercial and natural areas), or if things would mostly seem normal to someone who is used to visiting the area but hasn't done so since this shutdown stuff started.

Correct. TVA owns the grounds and buildings. The owners lease the property. The old owners did not renew their lease so now the TVA is looking for new owners. The TVA has a small maintenance staff taking care of the property until then.

We have been selling land assets off lately and considering selling other assets at other recreational areas, if anyone had the money to buy it, right now would be good time to go to the board and ask to buy it.

Last weekend a couple of buddies and I went to Harrah’s Cherokee and spent Thursday night in Asheville.
Wicked Weed was open (had to wait a few minutes for a table), and after a couple beers we left. It was a little after 9pm and hardly anything was open. I have never seen that place so deserted at that hour.
Harrah’s was fine. Masks were required. No smoking allowed which was nice.

Any updates on Asheville in July? Are most of the restaurants open now? The breweries? Headed that way in two weeks.

I just got back from asheville. We basically could do everything. Hike, wicked weed was fully open, most restaurants we just made reservations and they had table service.
some breweries were not open, but there was plenty to do.
Ziplining with navitat was open and had to wear a mask at certain times but it was hella fun
Biltmore was open and b/c of covid it was pretty empty which was nice

Pretty sure sierra Nevada is not open. We only went to wicked weed bc it has hoppy beers for me and no one else I was with drinks beers.
We really enjoyed the montford, rooftop bar downtown. But get there early bc of covid not many spots are open
I will say google is pretty good about keeping up with which ones are open and which are not. From what I could tell most were at least open for pickup and if you have a nice Airbnb or something the weather is perfect to sit outside and have beers.

In Boone/Sugar Mountain right now... not noticed much shutdown. Heading to Asheville next weekend. My friends there say it's pretty open, but I can't confirm yet.

I'm in Highlands this week and thought I'd give an update.
Highlands has a mask ordinance in place. You have to wear one on any public sidewalk, in any store, and when you enter a restaurant until you are seated. It looks like all the restaurants are open here, as well as all the shops. Trails and outdoor sites are all open. It was pretty crowded this past weekend when we arrived, but has thinned out, which is normal. It does seem a little less crowded than normal though(we come up here every July)
We drove up to Sylva yesterday. There is no mask ordinance on sidewalks there, just in stores and restaurants. It wasn't nearly as crowded as it normally is, maybe because Western Carolina has suspended classes? A couple of stores were closed, but all the restaurants and the 3 breweries there were all open.
Going to Brevard tomorrow, so may give a report on it tomorrow night, but I expect about the same.

Brevard was also fairly close to normal. Masks needed in stores, but I noticed a couple stores not really enforcing it. Way more people in Brevard not wearing masks than in Highlands, Cashiers, or Sylva, for whatever reason.
We walked around downtown for a couple of hours, then went and had lunch at Oskar Blues brewery. Kinda unimpressed with their taproom setup and lack of brewery only beers. I did enjoy the small batch Kolsch though, and brought back a crowler of Death By Kingcake. Reviews are kinda mixed online on it, and the bartender said it wasn’t her favorite.

Thanks for the update. We're staying near Franklin NC now. Leaving Sunday for a week. Never been to that part of the state. Appears to be a lot of hiking and waterfalls. Looks nice on the videos we've watched.

We are staying in Franklin North Carolina this week. So far I don't notice too much difference. I did notice some local restaurants are closed the very limited service. Most seem to be doing fine in. Strange to see people in Highlands wearing masks. It's a North Carolina requirement. But in the more rurl areas obviously some people are not going to comply.
