Pier 1 Imports looking to shut down stores ‘as soon as reasonably possible’

They were struggling before but hanging on. The shut down finished them off.

quote:

FORT WORTH, Texas (Gray News) - Pier 1 Imports will likely not survive after filing for bankruptcy, as the struggling retailer announced Tuesday it is looking to cease operations.

The company has filed a motion seeking bankruptcy court approval to close stores “as soon as reasonably possible” after store locations are able to reopen amid the coronavirus pandemic.

CEO Robert Riesbeck said this was not the outcome the company was hoping for after filing for bankruptcy.

“This decision follows months of working to identify a buyer who would continue to operate our business going forward,” Riesbeck said. "Unfortunately, the challenging retail environment has been significantly compounded by the profound impact of COVID-19, hindering our ability to secure such a buyer and requiring us to wind down.”

Pier 1 will look to begin liquidation sales as soon as stores reopen, and customers can still shop online.

I thought they had already done this. They didn't have much hope, even before the corona mess.

Pier One announced bankruptcy before COVID hit. They've been having liquidation sales for a while.

I know this because my wife dragged me in there in January to look at fricking pillows.

I guess it's time to see what the local stores have at a discount.

Great place to use the public bathroom if you're a man. Always clean and seemingly hardly used.

They been going out of business for many years now.

This government shut down will get the blame for many of failing business that have to shut down when the real culprit in their failing is and will continue to be online shopping. Especially in the cheap crap sector of retail sales.

they charged neiman marcus prices for ikea-quality furniture.

not surprising. i think i walked into one here about 1 time in 10 years and was like 'yep, they still want $700 for a bamboo chair' and walked out.

Can't say this bothers me at all. In the end they and so many more like them are just knick knack crap people don't need anyway. Made in China crap to boot. If we want to ever crawl out from under the consumerism mess we've built for ourselves, this is a good place to start.

Asking the real questions. This wasn't sex pillows for positioning, these were fricking pillows.
