They've been closing stores since last fall. This was going to happen regardless

Exactly. That said, the woman and I found an uncharacteristically very nice piece of furniture at Pier One in early February, which when coupled with the going out of business sale price, made for quite the steal. Just tonight, I remarked what a damn good deal.

Yes, the original price point was outrageous.

I was at a strip mall today just riding through to kill time. Had to go to Lowe's nearby. Looked at Pier 1 and said to myself "I wonder how in hell they have managed to stay open and if they'll ever make a comeback after this virus crap".

Well, you answered my question.

All these “ closing “ threads are the same. Thousands of people losing their jobs and everybody lines up to shite on the brand in question. When these are the stakes right now at this particular time in our history I don’t get it.

Companies going under and thousands of people losing jobs is awful. I never understand the celebratory threads and amazon herp derp that happens during each of these. So many people don't see the big picture. We need companies and jobs, every one of them matters. The ripple effect for each of these losses is massive.

Wrong. Pier 1 is the location where the imports arrive. I should know

Pier 2-99 is where the Wal Mart and Target imports arrive.

Interestingly I read where Amazon may purchase parts or the entirety of JC Penney (the one area where Amazon is not strong is apparel and they think JCPenney could help them in that area):

In your industry, imports are classified as either Walmart/Target or any and everything else?

And there are only 99 piers?

Thanks for the imported TP shortage

This is what's messed up. The stock was down to $6.40 a share in February of 2009 and rocketed up to $485 dollars a share in July of 2013 only to go bankrupt in 2020. If that doesn't show you that the stock market is rigged, I don't know what will.

They should took whatever money they had in the bank and risked it all on Vegas. They would have had a better chance than selling their knick knacks glass and pottery.

Pier 1 was fun. In a rummaging through your grandma’s attic sort of way.

And yet somehow Sears lives on. I swear it will be here for the apocalypse.

The one in Metairie is no more. It's been boarded up a long time.

I remember making several trips to Pier 1 with my parents to furnish our house(s) when I was a kid. Just as the 80s had their mall culture, the kids who grew up in the following decade or two had "strip mall culture." I grew up dead in the middle of the two eras, and while it wasn't exactly the same, I do still get a bit nostalgic when I see some of these staples of my childhood struggling or going under. And of course, I will never root for any American to lose their jobs.

The landscape of the suburbs/outskirts of mid-sized cities has changed. Where you remember seeing a Hastings, Best Buy, Target, Starbucks, Chick-Fil-A, Pier 1, Circuit City, Old Navy, Hobby Lobby etc. will soon be just empty and decaying buildings, much like the dead malls. I've heard a lot of speculation about what will become of those buildings: mixed use, apartments, churches, warehouses etc. but none of them seem plausible aside from maybe warehouses. Which is sort of depressing imagining a world of just big faceless buildings dominating the landscape.

RIP Pier 1

Don't think we have one of those....but the answer is fricking home goods...the warehouse that is homegoods. And it always comes after we've gone out to eat and are stuffed...the kinda feast you just wanna layout on the couch after and inevitably it turns to....
"Let's go to home goods!"
"Why? What do we need there?"
"Just wanna see what they have."

One of these popped up in my city, oddly enough in a location formerly occupied by JC Penney. I don’t get what makes them different than any of the other umpteen stores of the same variety, all which appear to be losing market share to Amazon and Wayfair. Pier 1, Pottery Barn, Bed Bath & Beyond, Tuesday Morning all sit right in there and none of them are doing well...what makes Home Goods any different?
