no different than becoming an actor in commercials. Self published advertising is so much cheaper than media buys and people respond to it so much better.

the influencers out there are doing the ad buyers a huge solid. On the millions of eyeballs level that ad buy would be also in the millions.

Yep, I'm not knocking it at all, either. If enough people care about what types of products you are using or reviewing than by all means make a ton of $$$ off it.

My wife and I get amused at the interest we have received from family and friends on how to do it. She gets messages all the time from people needing pointers. She used to explain but burned out after the 20th time. Now she just says "I just work my arse off." People act as if anyone can do it. You really need a purpose and commitment in order to succeed.

It is a unique field. Many of the influencers become friends.

At first I did not understand their purpose, but I get it now. If a woman sees Sofia Vergara promoting furniture on TV, they know that she does not actually like the cheap crop, she just wants the fame and career. An influencer is more genuine. If they would buy the product and believe in it, that is what now appeals to the average person. Especially if you can send messages to and from the influencer. You become connected.

She now gets messages from followers asking specifically for household decor. So she is now an interior decorator for free to the purchaser. That is why I mentioned the need for a bigger house.....to market all these items.

I did not realize how big an industry it is.

yes and it’s the same concept being played online as social media monetizes (Pinterest, Instagram etc). When tiktok gets its regulatory issues straight it will be the money making monster...

by the way a little unsolicited advice.
be careful of letting her get consumed by social media. Yes it’s her job but it’s too easy to never disconnect. Especially if she is the one generating most of yalls income. Long term that kind of constant connectedness isn’t healthy

Best of luck

We both realize that. We have been learning how to manage it. I think that hiring employees would help us drastically, but we are no there yet. We need to do our homework before we hire.

She promotes what she likes. She received jeans from Wal-Mart. She would not step foot in a Wal-Mart for clothes otherwise. Turns out that they were the best fitting jeans she ever had, and she is not a jean person. The quality was good for the price. She promoted it just like that and it sold like crazy.

She had a boot company contact her. Never wore their boots before. They let her pick two pairs off the website. She picked what she liked and promoted them as well.

She also does promotions for small businesses. According to her, some of these small businesses message her often thanking her for the major sales. She gets gifts, free stuff, and random bonus checks from them without request.
An influencer can really change a small local business for the better, as it gives them nationwide exposure for cheap advertising. They send her items to market, if she does not like them or the quality for the price she will tell them and not promote it.

I think that is why she does so well. She is just a normal suburban woman with kids.

Jesus H Christ...I just read the whole thread and it took this long to actually explain the business model?

If she's doing affiliate marketing and it's generating good money, she must have a large social media following. What was it about her that got her that audience? How large is said audience and on what channels?

I don't understand how this can make much money. People really put that much confidence in people on social media being paid to hawk products?

You should take a hard look at how many in that circle are divorced or victims of infidelity.

Making your daily life your job isn’t easy and is a rough path. Figure out a way to stay grounded or you’ll be enveloped by the dangerous beast that is Social Media.

Look at this:

quote:

They send her items to market, if she does not like them or the quality for the price she will tell them and not promote it.

They’re paid to selectively promote only good things and suppress and ignore anything bad and the businesses enjoy a relationship with the influencer that allows them to manipulate and avoid bad press.

In essence, fashion critics, etc have been replaced by influencers in a symbiotic relationship with manufacturers and businesses.

It’s not technically much different than how critics used to operate except the critics have a better reach into the audience and the manufacturer has a closer and more subsidized relationship with the critic.

It’s the same basic scenario in theory that happened to the movie industry when paid YouTube critics destroyed film critics.

Social Media is a terrifyingly perfect and precise tool for marketing.

Op you need to take a long hard look by yourself without your wife on the long term income here. For every Kardashian that sustains for many years there’s 1000s of flashes in the pan that hit it big for a couple months and then it starts drying up. Just be conservative with your spending.

I think you’d be better off hiring assistants and keep working yourself.

I mean that child youtube star who opens toys is the highest paid youtuber out there and makes something absurd like $25MM/yr (this honestly might be on the low end).

It's a really successful model currently but I do feel its dangerously close to becoming what tv ads have become which is essentially background noise. The reason its been so successful is you aren't getting inundated with ads constantly, it is much more genuine. Well if you have been on youtube/instagram recently you realize that has changed drastically and now they are everywhere. It will inevitably turn people off.

I had this same thought while reading the updates. There aren't many influencers who can sustain for years, much less decades. Seems foolish for OP to give up his career over this, IMHO

This is very wise advise. I have a few other concerns as well. I am not sure how much COVID/shutdown is benefiting this type of business. There isn't any barrier to entry, so I can see this getting saturated pretty quickly. Best of luck to you.

It is tough, and that's why I'm curious how large her following is and what type of content she creates.

Think about the math...if he's telling the truth that $1,500-$2,000 is a normal day, and assuming that she gets a MAX of 10% for each sale she drives. Assuming Walmart women's jeans are about $30 (they are, I checked).

She would get $3 per sale, which is 667 sales generated. Let's back that out...

Total followers x % that actually see the content x % that see, are interested in, and click the link x % that actually complete the sale and she gets the attribution (versus just being interested and going into the store later...a purchase she would not get credit for).

I work in digital sales, so making some very rough assumptions...

She'd be lucky if 30% of her followers see the content, and she'd maybe see a 2-3% click through rate, with a roughly similar sales rate of 2-3%. That's being pretty generous with the percentages. That would mean her following is around 3,557,333 people.

So either my numbers are way off, his story is way off, or his wife has some really interesting perspective and content to share that would get that many people following her...which is why I asked. Very few normal people just organically get to that many follows and then randomly decide, "hey, I should start a business!"

Yep, agree that you don’t just limp into building this kind of following and business.
