I really want this to happen but I think stupidity will quickly take back over. If you open up fully on May 1st, every Mexican restaurant will be backed to the gills on Cinco de Mayo.

Some of these people (me) are in the camp of "I want to go back to life ASAP but I also don't want another prolonged shutdown because we reopened in the peak of the curve"

I am also in this camp. We're a long way from the end of April. The smartest thing for right now is not to make arbitrary cutoff dates.

See how this evolves. Heck, if it dies out in 2 weeks, why wait until April 30? If data suggests limited reopening, do that. If data suggests full reopening on the 30th, do that.

I don't think we should even discuss opening it back up until we have an adequate number of testing kits.

We tried that. It didn't work.

Not sure what you mean there

I think there will be a point where public fear can take the place of some of the governmental measures. I don't think everyone's going to go hop on a plane, and I assume plenty of sports are going to continue delaying or put some other limitations in place.

But at the same time, because we're at the mercy of the dumbest Americans, I think we have to get past the danger zone before we can attempt that. Undoubtedly some people will handle the reopening very poorly, so the fewer cases floating around out there when that happens - the more likely we'll be able to keep things open.

Reality is I think we're looking at half-open stuff through the Summer. I assume there will be capacity controls and continued cancellations of events for a while.

Open it back up in tiers starting May 1st. By Memorial Day, everything including malls and beaches.

Open it back up starting Friday for no other reason than I'm selfish and I want to see us return to some sort of normalcy.

true, but what’s to say things wouldn’t be worse in a couple weeks if everything opens?

Also, bars and restaurants and retail stores will be still be getting bent over. Business won’t be booming anytime soon Imo. Not advocating against opening things back up, but i think a lot of people don’t realize it’s still going to be bad for a long time

Should probably continue to monitor the trend for the next 3-5 days and then begin to gradually open non-essentials if the trend is holding. Would probably be smart to limit occupancy at stores/restaurants/bars for 2-3 weeks after opening.

I could see most things being back to normal by mid-may or sooner.

Leave it closed. You open something without a fix which in turn will cause more people to become sick would be foolish. Shut it down, find a solution, then slowly open it back up.

If the numbers continue to improve then we need a hard re-open date so businesses can start game planning to get back up and running.
This is all BS anyway as the majority of hospitals aren't getting "creamed" as predicted.

Define adequate. And what if it takes until like June or even July to have enough test kits?

I guess my question here, is at what point does the cure (not literal cure but what we are doing now) for the virus become worse than the virus itself?

Yeah but NOLA is exactly the type of place that could get immediately overburdened again if things are opened up too soon. No offense, but it's not somewhere that I think will govern itself very well. I'm not advocating for more government overreach, but I do think it's wise for a place like NOLA to get numbers really really low for itself and for places where people who come to NOLA live before trying to even gradually reopen.

Question is moot now. Shutting things down the last couple of weeks have already started paying dividends. In another week it might be possible to re-open stuff on a rolling basis.

Not shutting things down would have hurt the economy longer-term, but some people are too short-sighted to see that.
