OT lawyers... Any clients told you not to work on their cases?

This is happening a lot. Transactional practices are hit harder than litigation. But it is starting to happen with litigation. With court shutdowns and suspension of deadlines, an increasing number of clients (more self insured corporations than insurance companies) are telling their lawyers not to bill them during the quarantine.
It’s not that easy. What do you do if you have a June trial date that is still on the calendar? Just stop preparing? One insurer told me they only want me doing “essential” work, but didn’t bother to define what that means. So I’m working.
We are going to keep our 35 employees employed come hell or high water.

A few sections of the firm are mostly shutdown. A couple sections are busier than ever.
Once this ends we'll probably need to hire a couple more lawyers and a few more staff to handle the influx of matters.

Yup. Either try to settle it now or put in on the shelf.
No depositions to prep for, no motions to attend. We've played catch-up and are now looking for things to do. Also, do not necessarily want to do work that client's may not be able to pay for if they go under.
No bonuses this year.

My brother is staying very busy in Washington DC handling patent cases.

Can’t a lawyer on either side file an indefinite continuance on the grounds of preparation and due diligence being stymied by the pandemic or something?
If not a thing, then it’s a case by case (don’t know if pun intended?) and if the client says “stop”, and they’re unprepared and lose, its on the client.
Granted, it will look poorly in the defense firm’s/attorney’s record.

Seismic events like this always trigger rate cuts in the defense industry, "we will do comp defense for 50 dollars an hour" is how it will start.
If you think an expensive lawyer costs you too much money, wait until you hire a cheap one.

Why aren’t y’all using Zoom? Seems like we’re having most, if not all opposing counsel, agreeable to Zoom depositions.

Has the trial been pushed previously?
If it's the first trial calendar, at least in my experience, there's a 95% chance it's not gonna go even under normal circumstances. 99% now.
But I'd just document the shite out of it for the client and let them make the call. From their POV it's probably a fair gamble. They know it's not going to happen and they don't want you prepping twice.

I'm happy to defend via zoom
I'm not taking via Zoom unless it's forced

i had one set in mid-May and contacted opposing counsel once the LASC shut things down on 3/22 to get her to agree to pass b/c of deadline issues that were now on the horizon. i don't know why your client wouldn't want to do something similar if they don't want you to bill right now

You'll be glad to know Dudley DeBossier is already running we can can't do anything about the corona but if you get in a "minor fender bender" during these troubled times we're ready to step up to the plate commercials.

Nope. You have the right to a speedy trial. If the state is the cause of delay and it has been 180 days, congrats on the freedom.

It applies to people accused of a CRIME.
That's not most of what is being discussed here.

My four clients are killing us with assignments. Still having initial conferences. Still getting calls and emails for statuses. Even though most of these people are working from home, it feels like business as usual on my end.

That was our stance a week ago. Who knows how long this will last, though.

Strangely enough, my clients are pretty understanding that everything has kinda shut down and things are moving slower.
I’m using it as time to catch up on a ton of stuff.
