let's discuss this opioid issue in the USA

after watching "the pharmacist" i'm kinda torn on this addiction thing. i've never fought addiction but, i'm not sure that i would blame the drugs. i have taken prescribed opioids and quit when the pain was gone or if i ran out of prescriptions. it's gonna really suck when you have surgery and all they will be able to prescribe is a bottle of advil in the future.

It’s the people. Whether it’s drugs, guns, whatever. People make choices. We’re a society that likes to place blame on everything else but ourselves.

I blame God. I've been graced by not having an addictive personality. However, I completely understand how some people get hooked after just a small time on pain killers or drinking or even gambling. To us non addictive people, it's easy to be judgemental about it. But probably 25-40% start off innocent with a dr's script.
Would those people have ended up being some sort of addict of drugs or thrown their life away for something else? Not sure. I'd LOVE to see a real life study done on the issue that isn't trying to prove or disprove blame. A little more care from the medical community would go a long way though in at least keeping it from getting out of hand.

We as humans will always find a way to abuse things. It becomes real easy to abuse opioids whenever doctors are giving them to us. Opioids need to go and it’s time for marijuana to be legal

To an extent, I do agree. However it's naive to think big pharma doesn't have some blood on their hands. They've engineered drugs to be more addictive and given incentives to docs prescribing more of their drugs.

Addiction is genetic. Easy access to opioids was like gas on a fire for these people.

When you lump in legal prescription opiod users with the junkies who live under a bridge and you don't differentiate between the 2 in the fed/state data, you can create whatever narrative you want. Fentanyl is categorized as an opiate and so is hydrocodone. One MUCH more dangerous than the other. They also don't take into account the "mixing" of other drugs with opiates. If an opiate is there, it's an opiate related death. There's your epidemic. And it's horseshite for the most part and it's hurt people taking it like they are supposed to and probably pushed them to the street towards heroin. It's also helped some people who needed to get off of them because they didn't legitimately need them. I've looked at the statistics even in the Baton Rouge area and there is no epidemic of deaths in this area. Sure people die but they also die from electrocution, being fat, etc.
And mark my words, Benzodiazepines are next on the "hit list". They are the next "epidemic" that the government will focus on.

Some people are more susceptible to addiction. Some do willfully abuse drugs and become addicted and I don't have much pity on them. Others are prescribed painkillers for injury and become addicted.

Sorry didn't mean to imply some people are born addicts to specific substances. More that there is a genetic influence in people's potential for becoming addicts. Some people are pre-disposed to becoming an addict and others that can drink booze, smoke cigarettes, etc without becoming an addict.
