I love how people argue that Scouts are outdated. The fact that most people today lack even the most basic outdoor and survival skills drives me insane. I know grown men who can’t build and start a camp fire. You end up with the hordes of people at Katrina that stood in the road with their hands up at government helicopters begging for help instead of taking care of themselves.

Same. Lived through the jokes. Hiked two-legs of the AT and most of the trails in North Alabama, canoed every creek in AL with class II or better rapid, Hiawatha, Natahalia, etc.
Aside the fact that our SM was an avid outdoors-man, conversationalist, father to (3) daughters and never taught a merit-badge class on the weekends or otherwise, we always had four or five other fathers on these trips and at most-all of the meeting to drive vans, help with organizing and enjoy the outdoors.
Granted pedos are deceitful, but it's damn disappointing that those evil frickers worked their way into the system without some dad seeing the warning signs. But maybe I'm thinking from the early 80's mentality.
It really is a damn shame.

You wouldn't be surprised how resourceful a 14YO young man can be pitching a tent and cooking a camp meal in the dark, with temps in the mid-30s and raining cats and dogs, with minimal help from adults.

As an Eagle Scout, this is really heartbreaking for me. I was part of a great organization led by several good men, including my father who volunteered his time. I know everyone makes jokes and all that but the Boy Scouts is a great organization. The leadership had little supervision and allowed any volunteers to be a part. They trusted people to do the right thing and uphold their moral code but in the end, that will be their demise thanks to a small percentage of people who took advantage of these kids as well as the system.

The Boy Scouts is a great organization and it is a shame these perverts will bring it down. Biden Powell is rolling over in his grave right now.

Scout training isn’t going to help you find clean water and food sources after a massive hurricane like Katrina decimates entire swaths of land. I sure as frick don’t remember getting disaster training or my two Eagle Scout brothers either. Make a fire? Sure.

And hate to tell you, but the populations hit the hardest by Katrina aren’t going to be the ones with access to Boy Scouts either. Sorry, but my experience with Scouts is that you need a certain level of money for it. The Scouts were always pretty white for me.
