Why do churches get so worked up over gays?

Why is this certain sin treated like its worse than all the others? I love Christian values but I have never understood how someone can go get blasted drunk then scream about being gay being a sin. They are both sins as outlined in the bible. Don't use scripture to vilify others when you will ignore the parts of the scripture that vilify you.

Gays and drunks are welcome in church. I don’t want the drunk guy to be a preacher either.

Show me where alcohol is sinful in the Bible. There’s a LOT of very explicit condemnations of homosexuality, but there’s nothing about alcohol anywhere near that explicit or direct.

Are you saying alcoholism and homosexuality are the same?

You remember that story of Jesus turning water into wine?

Christians see it as a sin. And it’s a sin that is trying to be normalized without asking for forgiveness/repentance. Not an exactly good example (yes Christianity is full of hypocrisy) but it would be as if we made thievery normal and unpunished.

The loudest ones about it usually have the most vivid images of it when they’re denouncing it.

Most gays are fine with me.

The flaming ones and the militant political ones, not so much.

Of the two gays and three lesbians I am pretty close to, 80% are conservative to very conservative. One of them was on the Trump Train seven months before I joined.

ALL are welcome at my church, but the issue is not homosexuality per se. It is that a large number of homosexuals have infiltrated church clergy and are preaching that homosexual acts are fine in the eyes of God.

That is a lie. Some very good people are being led astray by clergy who have a wordly agenda, not a Godly one.

The homosexual lobby CANNOT STAND to have their sin called a sin. In fact, they don't just want it tolerated. They want their sin promoted, celebrated and glorified. I AM NOT on board with that.

Because they refuse to acknowledge it is sin.

That is equivalent to standing with your fist to air yelling at God that we know better than He does.

Being drunk and a sodomite are definitely not on the same level. One calls for the death penalty and God rained literal hellfire on a whole city for it.

But I don’t see many churches preaching against it these days. Churches have become very watered down and love to cater to the world in an effort to fill the pews (it won’t).

The really short answer is a good church treats all mortal sins as sins.

Why you hear more about say chastity/gayness than drunkenness has to do with where we are as a society. Society has tried to tell us that being unchaste is not a sin. Society has not embraced drunkenness. The church fights fires by what are being most "promoted" in society sometimes, not because one sin is worse than the other.

I feel like people attacking Christians have made this a bigger deal than any bible beaters have. Also, any raging alcoholic going on about homosexuality being a sin is a massive hypocrite. Hate the sin, love the sinner.

...because the sinners suggest that it is impossible for them to live life without committing this sin...and have no intention of trying to live life without committing the sin.

Other than that, there is no differnce in the sin.

Two things are true here:

1) Christians have put too much emphasis on making homosexuality the center of a fight/dispute that should be about much more than homosexuality. UMC literature talks about guns, government-guaranteed employment, etc. Churches have been systematically undermined for decades by those looking to use them as a platform for social advocacy. In other words, the war should be on Gospel-less religion, not merely homosexuality.

2) That said, homosexuality gets particular attention because there is a movement to ask the church to tolerate ongoing sin without exception, including promotion of those practicing said sin to positions of authority. More in line with #1, countless protestant (and Catholic) churches and clergies go well beyond this to where the church/faith is just a messaging device for their positions on gay/trans rights, etc. If someone is a seminary student or clergy and is more active in LGTB events than evangelism, they're merely using the faith for political ends.

There aren't a lot of businesses or even government jobs where one can make a life holding a sign and yelling and thinking deep thoughts about injustice. The church is however, and it's being abused by people who have little/no interest in the Great Commission.

In my 38 years of church attendance, I have never once heard anything negative about gay persons. On the few occasions homosexuality has been mentioned at all it was brought up in the same context as adultery or sex out of marriage.
