Agree.....Lafayette restaurant-goers are picky and local-loyal, but you might say that The Chimes is "close enough" being from BR.

There are alot of LSU alums here who have favorable memories of The Chimes. That's all well and good....but can The Chimes create an identity here like they did in BR. That's what it takes to make it here or anywhere long term.

Look no further than Judice Inn: a burger joint that never served french fries, in operation for 60-70 years.

La Fonda: mediocre tex-mex, good steaks, margaritas that are legendary, but its the place to see and be seen, among other things. Coronavirus can't kill this place.

I hope Chimes can make a similar impact.

What's going on at the old Posado's?

To me Judice inn isn’t as good as it was 5-10 years ago. Or maybe I’m just getting old.

I attended LSU in 1986-87 and have very fond memories of The Chimes. I believe the nearly four decades of success is do to Location . Basically it’s on campus and within walking distance of Tiger Stadium, the dorms, Fraternity row, and other bars back in the day: Murphy’s, the Bayou, Library. On CFB game day, there are 125K people in town as The Chimes is always packed. Often times it’s referenced amongst friends as a place to meet up b/c of its proximity to LSU’s campus.

The current problem I see with Lafayette is businesses and restaurants are still feeling the effects from the oil field. People are still going out to eat/drink but not as frequently like they did pre-2014. Additionally people aren’t spending money like they did back in the day. I definitely want the Chimes to succeed in Lafayette because it’s great for the local economy and its employees. Like any other business, success will depend on how many butts they can put in the seats. Regarding other businesses that have withstood the test of time: Alessi’s, Dwyers, and Poor Boys Riverside.... hope they each last another 100 yrs

That’s a bold move with lots of $$$ invested. I’ve lived in Laffy since 1987 and the locals are very finicky about dining establishments. If the investors are local with strong ties to the community, they’ll receive support. If the owners are not from here, it’s gonna be a tough hill to climb. Lafayette is a food town that can be difficult to survive long term.

I agree with everything you said.. however.. Lafayette IS a sports bar town, the menu won't offend anyone's sensibilities or wallets, Lafayette has a huge LSU alumni contingency and fan base with many good memories and good times had at the original Chimes, the Lafayette Chimes will likely have a local appeal while maintaining the integrity and DNA of the brand.
I predict this will be an epic win for the Chimes and Lafayette.

I’m not an LSU person, nor from Baton Rouge. I’ve eaten at the Chimes in Covington twice quite a few moons ago.

An “upper scale” sports bar setting, with a huge draft menu featuring a ton of local beers, where I can order “bar food” consisting of crab cakes, gumbo, raw oysters and crab fingers....count me in.

They have a location on Coursey that stays packed, and I'm sure the one in Covington is doing well.

Also Lafayette: A Walk Ons AND a Chimes????

walk ons is very mediocre.

We'll see if The Chimes can make a better showing.

Do people from Baton Rouge really think Chimes is good food?

I do yes. Their chargrilled oysters are better than Drago's in my opinion. Their poboys, while not being classic new Orleans poboys, are good. All their fried foods are just as good as any other old school seafood restaurants. Portion sizes are decent as are the prices. Have good beer selections on draft. What's not to like?

To tack on - the sautéed crab claws, the cheese logs, and the blackened shrimp nachos are some of my favorite things to eat in town. Always great beer available. Pretty much have their pick of service industry employees so service is always good. Stay open until 2am (although they might have recently changed that to midnight).

Oh and their wings are better than any wing joint.

The Chimes onion rings are the best.

I thought the same thing about Walk Ons in Baton Rouge. It's Lafayette location is no where near a college campus and still stays packed. I think Chimes will do well but it might put a couple other sports bars in the area out of business.
