'Birds of Prey' bombs at the box office — and feminists are blaming sexism

Get woke, go broke.

The latest entry in the DC Universe of superhero movies bombed badly at the box office, and feminist critics are blaming the misogyny and sexism of the male audience.

Others say the unwieldy title of "Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)" might be partially to blame.
Whatever the cause, Birds of Prey only racked up a disappointing $33 million in its domestic opening weekend. Its estimated to have cost upwards of a $100 million to produce and market.
Actor Ewan McGregor explicitly described the movie as a feminist themed attack on misogyny in an interview from October 2019.

Warner Bros. is changing the title of the movie to "Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey" in hopes of raising audience interest.

Either their marketing sucked, or my head was in the sand because I never even heard of it.
Not that I would have gone to see it if I had.

Isn't February generally considered the worst time of year to release a movie and is thus the time when studios dump their shite into theaters?
Maybe this movie is just shite?
Maybe this movie is just shite?

Margot Robbie didn't want Harley Quinn to be sexualized as she was in [Suicide Squad]
Well if that’s the case then they’re just idiots who hate money.

Suicide squad wasn't great and this is a spin off of that.

What the frick is that team? Other than Harley not one of those characters looks remotely interesting . Just a bunch of losers hanging out at a San Fran mall arcade

If sexism was the real reason for a movie’s failure, wouldn’t it be stupid to make such a movie?

Feminists blamed sexism and the patriarchy for the new Charlie’s angels reboot bombing too...
It’s their only play when the go woke, they blame everyone else for their failure instead

"Wasn't great" is being very kind to Suicide Squad. That movie was straight arse.

Suicide Squad sucked, and this isn't a comic with a large built in fan base. It needed more of a good lead in, and got the opposite.
Generally, people seem to think it's a decent movie. It's just hard to build much momentum when SS was such a train wreck of an intro and the source material isn't particularly well known.

quote:They will take this as "You just don't want strong female leads in movies!" failing to realize that nobody wants to go see a political statement. Wonder Woman did amazing at the box office because it was a political stance. It was just a damn good movie and didn't try to be anything else. Why is it so hard for them to understand this?

Also Harley Quinn without The Joker is not very interesting.

Maybe if the title wasn’t an essay

This is our society. It is always someone else's fault. It is the mentality of a child.

I have said it countless times, but these bleeding hearts are barking up the wrong tree trying to paint action/comic book/fantasy fans as women haters. They have no problems with strong female leads/characters, so long as they make sense.
Ellen Ripley
Sarah Connor
Charlie Baltimore (Long Kiss Goodnight)
Wonder Woman
Black Widow
Dottie Hinson (League of their Own)
Alita
Eowyn
Leeloo (5th Element)
Princess Leia
Respectfully, most of these characters are waaaaaaaaaaaay before the current "girl power for girl power's sake" movement.

But what a time to be alive!
You've got a character that was created for a 1990s afternoon cartoon that became a fan hit, made it into the comics, becoming an even bigger hit, and now she's just like Superman and the latest iteration of Batman....bombing in multiple movies on the big screen.
Way to go DC!
Also, who knew that Rosie Perez was still working?

Thanks, we needed a new circle-jerk thread.

Maybe they just need to cast Geena Davis in more things.
She was a pirate captain in "Cutthroat Island" back in the day too.
Edit to add: And didn't people love her and Susan Sarandon in "Thelma & Louise"?

How can a nonexistent audience be sexist?

shocking, I figured a spin off of a previously failed superhero movie would have killed it

I like the idea behind the movie. Harley Queen getting out from underneath Jokers wings and becoming her own person, while also teaming up with some other heroines. That seems like a decent enough premise.
But the execution on that premise is where they are failing.
Just like Suicide Squad. Good idea, terrible execution.
