Luke is as much a Mary Sue as Rey. He's immediately good, trains for half an hour in the second movie, and is then suddenly the best.

there are years between the 2nd and 3rd movies where Luke trains

hell, Dagobah in ESB is weeks of training and he still loses badly to a Vader who is holding back

in the first movie he finds the force for like 10 seconds

They’re too stupid to realize that its not that guys have a problem with strong female leads. It’s the fact that these movies are portraying almost every white male as a villain or a spineless soy boy. White male = evil in Hollywood these days. The movie probably flat out sucked (I haven’t seen it and don’t intend to), but they couldn’t admit they made a bad movie, so they have to blame somebody.

Box Office Data Prove It Wasn’t Men Who Tanked ‘Birds Of Prey’

Yeah blaming men seems lazy. I am not sure why they chose to spinoff a movie from the Suicide Squad disaster. They would have been better off creating an entire new universe to feature Harley Quinn in, like what they did with Joker.

If those data are accurate maybe the underlying issue is female movie viewer fatigue. They've seen a very large number of movies where women kick arse and maybe the novelty is wearing thinner than before? Wonder Woman, Captain Marvel, and Rey have already done it before and you'll have to have a compelling story instead of just relying on a girl kicking arse hook.

The problem is not that women or men... or people who aren't sure what gender they are this week... have seen too many kick arse female leads. The problem is some of these movies have sucked the meat missile.

You can't get more masculine then Dwayne "the Rock" Johnson and he's had some absolute turds that bombed at the box office.

It isn't about the plumbing of the lead actor, though, if you are doing an action movie, it behooves you to at least cast an actor/actress that looks like they could whip cream. It is about the script, the direction, the effects, and the acting.

A shitty movie, whether the lead is male or female, is just a shitty movie. I've seen plenty of movies with a kick arse female lead character that were great. I've seen plenty of movies with a kick arse male character that stunk on ice.

Give us a good movie. If you give us a good movie, even if the movie doesn't do well at first glance, it will bounce back in time. If you give us a bad movie we will crap all over it.

If Rey had been Ray we'd still be crapping on the Star Wars sequels only we'd be calling the lead character a Gary Sue rather than a Mary Sue.

Finally got around to seeing the movie and I was right on the money in my earlier assessment.

First off, the synopsis for you tl;dr folks: this movie came across as a 2nd rate attempt at being a lesser, female version of Deadpool.

What killed this movie was the writing. The story moved far too fast and the character development fell flat. Margo does a great job as Harley but it just wasn't enough. At the very least they should have written her character as more ditzy and lucky, the balance they were trying to strike between adorably crazy, psychotic killer and (anti?) heroine never really seemed to work.

Another problem with this movie is (as I mentioned in another post) they are taking a genre that appeals far more to males than females and tried to hammer that square peg of genre appeal into the round hole of female enjoyment (:rimshot:).

Surprisingly the one place the writing did work was in getting the all-female group together. The story of how the team of only females came about didn't beat you over the head with it's blatant feminism...

...or that they are there simply because uterus...

...but rather instead it laid out a scenario where it made sense that these particular characters, who only happen to be female, all have to come together. Now if you expand beyond that to the fact that almost every female character in the movie is where they are because they are a victim of some man's assholery, then you can easily begin to see definite markings of Ovarian Power with just a light drizzle of #MeToo. This is especially prevalent in the fight scenes where all the people they fight against are men and they seem to easily beat all their asses. Strangely though, it didn't have the feel of being the over-whelming story of the movie, just some ancillary aspects.

Or maybe... the writing was so bad that they couldn't even properly nauseate the audience with their overwhelming Estro-fest?

Whatever the reason, the ManBad/WomanGood theme never really fully developed (which I consider a good thing) but neither did much else. All-in-all I would have been better off buying scratch-offs with my $12.

They should be bitching at the female armpit hair and camo brigade instead of men don’t you think? I mean nobody complains that not enough women show up to see Expendables or James Bond films. It’s getting to the point where I think they’re making these bombs on purpose just for talking points to push their politics. They’re like campaign ads and the box office returns are man hating poll numbers.

They very much do complain about this. The studios complain about this. They want everyone's money, not just men's. It's why they make female-led action movies. They obviously haven't figured out how to consistently get females to the theater to see these films, but they definitely complain about it.

Mutual-appeal movies are a very fine line. Studios would be better off not trying to force mutual-appeal into movies and genres that simply aren't mutual appeal.

That’s a stretch. Perez is the only one singled out by men because of her sex. Canary and the kid get into their own trouble, Huntress is a wash (evil and good men in her origin), Harley and Joker aren’t your typical wronged woman scenario.

The a-hole men in these origins are less prevalent than Joe Chill killing Batman’s parents or the male science council members forbidding Jor-el from saving his family. Let’s face it, the average bad guy is male, especially when it comes to the origin of the hero.

They're all connected because of one man who is a mob boss not that hard to understand

Harley I believe has slightly enhanced strength and reflexes as well as being extremely experienced in hand to hand combat. Although it's obvious she can't take massively large men such as one scene in particular. Most of her work is done with a bat or mallet

Huntress is a trained assassin and Black Canary obviously has powers although it's never stated if she has enhanced strength

I'll give you Montoya though

It's not that it wasn't fully developed just that it didn't exist. The Huntress backstory pretty much kills that idea.

Watched it yesterday. Did not laugh once. It was not because it was a bunch of women but because the jokes seemed forced and were just not funny. There were some cool visuals but overall I noticed I started looking at my watch a lot. Margot looked a lot better in the suicide squad. It's like they went out of their way to make her look less attractive (clothes choices or whatever). Performances by everyone seemed either over the top (Ewan McGregor) or boring as sin (Huntress).

With all this stuff going on and huge amounts of bad guys doing bad guy things, we NEVER see Batman? Was he busy?

Overall, I have a feeling it might get nominated for a Razzie if it hasn't already.
