That’s how retarded some of y’all sound

ETA: I thought I was in the other thread. Where da frick did it go?

ETA: Sorry, but it’s not my responsibility to protect you bitches from other countries. You can protect yourself

No. My wife and I make about 150k a year combined and we have three kids in college right now. Would be really difficult and saddle all of us with debt without TOPS.

Raise the criteria for grades, but don't alleviate it. Too many good, deserving kids out there.

The check I write to the State of Louisiana for my fair share of taxes far outstrips the $4k or whatever it is my kid is currently getting from TOPS.

And the fees and all other associated costs with going to school is a helluva a lot more than TOPS as well.

That said, it does need to be changed, tightened up.

It's the opposite of welfare, it's completely merit based.

Why not work on fixing the reason people are leaving? How would removing TOPS fix anything here?

I know plenty of families with kids who received TOPS money and they are very well off

Financial status shouldn't matter on a merit based program.

There are ways to fix TOPS:
1) raise the standards (which has been brought up, but people cried "racism")...so how do you fix this cultural bullshite?
2) Include years working in Louisiana aspect as part of the program. There are a couple ways to do this...would be its whole own post

But pulling the rug out of TOPS completely is dumb. It would need be phased out over time...and the tax money saved would need to be outlined for a new plan that helps education and doesnt just become another welfare/slush fund of money. At least right now the money is working for taxpayers of the state (one of the very few programs that is)

TOPS is one of the very few programs that actually helps the middle class.

You gonna get a lot of downvotes from people who are 100 percent against "socialism", yet, TOPS is no different than what the Bernie Bros are advocating for.

Louisiana is going to sink cause global warming so it is okay to end the program. No need to educate people that will leave the state.

how about instead of doing away with it now, we wait unitl my kids are graduated??

Nah seriously, it needs to be a stay in state for x years trade off....there was something like this with teaching grants back in the 80-90's

How is TOPS welfare if it's merit/earned through achievement?
Pell grants are a lot more free money strictly based on a family's income and grades are irrelevant.

The main reason why it needs to be abolished is what it has done to the actual cost of college tuition. TOPS pays the tuition and the students are left with paying the Fees. When I was a freshman under Jindal, the Fees owed was under $1000 a semester, once Edwards had his reform of TOPs my senior year, I paid $3500 in fees my last semester. The colleges can’t raise the actual tuition because of TOPs complaining. So colleges raise there fees, which is the students burden.

I used to feel the same way

Then I had a revelation.

This is the only way that I will get any of my tax money back, so after I put several kids through college, I didn't let it bother me again

No.

The qualifying criteria needs to be raised because its too easy. And it needs to be changed to be treated as a student loan that's forgiven if certain conditions are met...such as graduating and living/working in Louisiana for at least 5 years after graduation.

If you don't finish school or if you move out of state right after school, then you should have to repay TOPS as if it were a traditional student loan.

You're going to get the downvotes for that OP. You see, "conservatives" in Louisiana love their handouts. I have two teenagers heading to college in the next few years and yet I support getting rid of it entirely.

Bedhog

If the tax money that's already collected goes into the system and reduces tuition along with higher education reform, I might go along with you. Cutting cost across the board would be more a priority than TOPS. Eliminating hobby degrees, cutting down the hours needed for degrees another. If you want to golf, play tennis and swim that's ok. Take all those hours out of the education system. All you need is 3 years to graduate if we stream line the process.
