re: How is Webb Park looking these days?

Fairways are great. There are definitely some bare spots on the greens but they're largely puttable and coming back decently after a rough summer. Not bad all things considered.

They just hired a new PGA pro named Kevin Landry a week or two ago, so hopefully he can get it in great shape again.

Kevin is a great guy and an excellent golfer. But the hiring of a PGA pro has absolutely nothing to do with course conditions -- at any golf course. PGA Professionals do not manage the golf course maintenance staff. They don't have that kind of training. They manage the golf shop. Superintendents manage the golf course and playing conditions.

Mike Drury is the superintendent at Webb and he does a very good job, considering. Webb's biggest problem is that they're running 45,000 rounds of golf a year over 1.3 acres of Tifdwarf putting surfaces.

You know who has 1.3 acres of greens? City Park. It's nine holes. You know who has Tifdwarf on their greens? Nobody (besides of course, City Park). They are literally the last two, I think. Tifdwarf was the industry standard from about 1960-1995 -- back when greens were mowed at a quarter inch and 9-10 on a stimpmeter was lightning fast.

The only other course that I know of that had Tifdwarf greens was Copper Mill. Copper Mill's greens sucked for years. Hopefully they will do better with Tifeagle.

When you mix the tiny size of Webb's greens with their inferior genetic makeup and add 45,000 hacks trampling them down 363 days a year -- you have a recipe for one of the most difficult golf course superintendent jobs in America.

From what I've heard though, BREC may be considering enlarging and renovating greens at both Webb and City to something similar to what's going on out at Clark. Until then, if you see Mike Drury out at Webb, buy him a coke.

Clark Park Golf Course Opens Tomorrow

Clark Park GC officially opens May 1. The course is in pretty good shape. The greens are good. Greens have full coverage of Tifeagle Bermuda and zero Poa annua. Fairways are pretty good, but you can see a few areas that still need to grow in. I think it's the same price as City Park to play. It's about the same length as Webb Park. Two par fives and two par threes. Two flags per green which is definitely different. It's worth going to check it out.

re: City Park BR Reno?

Nathan has worked with BREC for several years consulting on various projects (ie mini range at Webb). Currently, he's looking at potential course improvements at City, but a major renovation is not near term.

The new course at Clark will be planted in May of 2022, with a scheduled opening date of September 2022.
I heard a new group of investors has a new idea for The Bluffs. They're going to get the course back in shape and try to make money selling real estate and operating the club. This new direction that the new owners are going to take just may be the magic formula for success that has been missing at The Bluffs since it opened back in 1988.
Why don't you guys all settle this with a good old fashioned Tylenol PM eating contest?

re: Beaver Creek… people suck

Posted by LSUGolfman on 7/11/21 at 7:06 am to
Beaver Creek has a good golf course superintendent. He's been there about four years and things have gotten progressively better each year. Increased demand (from COVID spurt or other courses closing) does not improve conditions, at least at BREC. Their budget is set at the beginning of the year and not going to change due to improvement in cash flow. More traffic there only makes the course worse.

And don't forget one really big thing... full sunlight. Beaver, for the most part gets full sun everywhere (except for a few greens on the back nine). It's amazing what a good superintendent can do when he doesn't have to battle shade and tree roots all day.

LOL. Clearly you live at The Bluffs and are trying to create your own market via the Jedi Mind Trick.

Funny stuff there bro
Dumas was/is a horrible golf course that should have either been completely rebuilt or closed years ago. The fairways are common bermuda, not 419 or Celebration like every other course in town. There is no irrigation on tees on tees or fairways. The irrigation around the greens is like what I have in my yard.

The grass on the greens has been there since the 1960s. It's not like Tifeagle at Beaver Creek or MiniVerde at Santa Maria. All of the other local courses also have modern grasses. How could Dumas possibly compare favorably to any other course in the area?

All of these glaring deficiencies are dwarfed by the fact that it's flat as a pancake and one of the most poorly drained courses in Louisiana -- perhaps the world. I, for one, will be glad to see it go. Anything they build in it's place will be a definite upgrade.

My god the last thing you would ever want is a landscape architect taking care of a golf course.

I have a honeywell -- had it for about 3 years now. absolutely no issues. app is super simple to navigate. no instructions required. system now fully automated. I very rarely make adjustments.

re: Grass Recommendations

I would not recommend bermuda to anybody. I've been growing it for 25 years. It's just too much work to keep it weed free. There are some zoysias that are really nice. Do well in sun or shade. Geo or Zeon or maybe even Palisades. I'm not sure about any of these plants ability to withstand lots of urine in concentrated areas though.

I didn't use them a lot anyway, but I deleted them tonight. I won't be going back. I would like for everybody else in America to do the same.

Let's go folks. Delete those f***KING accounts.

Unbelievable how stupid people can be. This is a sad day for the United States.

I was out there a couple of weeks ago and it was good. Greens were very good, fairways nice... very few blemishes on the course. Yes, they were still in the middle of bunker renovation project, but its a cool layout and in good condition overall.
Why would you not get a submersible pump?

Far more efficient to push water than to pull it.
